it's the one thing I don't get, why hasn't in the past 20 years or so luck been on our side

We all know the transgressions with Bias, White Pitino, Wallace, O'Brien

but even after that in the big 3 era, we should've won 4 championships

-KG gets hurt
-Perk goes down in the finals, Sheed doesn't play up to standards
-Perk trade happens, Shaq is a shell of himself after injury; Green doesn't live up to expectations
-David West trade flops; OJ mayo trade breaksdown
-LeBron superhuman performance in the ECF
-Ray Allen goes cold in many playoff games can't hit anything
-Ray Allen Walks; Jason Terry, Courtney Lee fail to live up to expectations; Rondo out for the season; Sully out for the season
-No trade/signing was ever made for a center replacement

We also got lucky to win the title in the first year of the KG-Pierce-Ray era. We were lucky that Pierce's knee injury in the finals was not worse. We were lucky to get James Posey and Eddie House. We were lucky that Rose was out for the Bulls, and that the Magic were too dumb to add to Dwight Howard's cast instead of breaking it down by going for Gilbert Arenas, and we were lucky that Mike Brown coached the Lebron Cavs. It evens out in the end.

Well, we got one title, two conference championships, and made it to three conference finals over a five year span.

I'd say we got a little bit of good luck along the way as well.  Overall, I'm satisfied with how this last era worked out for our Celtics.

Sure, it could have worked out even better, but I'll take it, and look forward to the next era.

But, yeah, sometimes I still wake up with cold sweats in a mild panic attack over how the 2010 Finals ended up.

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
While the 2010 finals was a killer, why don't you ask guys like Ewing and Barkley how unlucky we were?

I'm not sure that this one was bad luck.

I think that, with some time removed from the contending years - I can say that I'm pleased with our run.

Sure - we could've/should've won more....there were some questionable calls made by officials in that 2010 Finals...

But OH THE MEMORIES:

I could probably post 20-30 more vids of the Good Times. The ride was AWESOME. I just can't focus on the misfortune.

For me, it was worth it. We got one, and with how Danny is positioning us with his management of our team, I think we'll be back in contention way before the Lakers will.

And that is good :).

I initially thought this was about the Bird, McHale, Parish era and was going to point out KC Jones running our starters into the ground during the regular season and rarely using the bench.

Given the age of our core when the run began, I think we did extremely well.

Injury risk and declining ability were both pretty big concerns, and the fact that our core gelled so quickly in that first year is IMO under-appreciated.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
Our 2008 NBA Championship was historically one of the greatest. We went from 2nd worst team to the champs. Nobody had ever pulled that off. Plus, our playoff run that year was also the longest in NBA history.

When you consider that the Big 3 won a title their first year together, I'd say they were very lucky.

Considering that Kobe and Duncan were still near the height of their powers and you had Howard and LeBron rising to prominence, they were lucky to win a single title.

2 (General) reasons.

1. Luck. Any team winning the championship in a given year is going against some wavy odds. Skill only gets you so far. Sometimes the ball just doesn't drop like it could.

2. Injuries. KG's (and Leon's) injury in 2009, which carried over to 2010, where perk was injured in the finals, which leads me to 2011 with the most injury prone front court we've had, plus ray's bone spurs, Rondo's elbow dislocation, and a bunch of minor injuries.

2011-2013, the fact that we were in the playoffs, I view as awesome. We outlasted our expiration date. No sour milk, homes.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

We definitely got unlucky in years 2 & 3 with the KG & Perk injuries.

That first season, though, was one helluva ride.

The fact that we could have won at least once more shows how great they were. As great as Bird, Mchale and Parrish were, they were getting beat in the first round of the playoffs when Pierce, KG and Ray were in the finals at roughly the same age. If the new big three had been put together when they were young like the previous big three, maybe they win three or four.

If KG does not hurt his knee, am convinced we get a title in 2009 and 2010.

Old players are saavy and experienced but also more injury prone.   A house is only as good as it's foundation.
