Compare that potential value to the savings on the buyout, the team will save money on the buyout players don't get the full dollar value, and add in his negative presence on and off the court and its not a crazy decision.

It's a matter of negotiation.  Some players will try to minimize the amount of money the give up.  A few seasons ago, Rajah Bell couldn't come to the agreement with the Jazz and they ended up waiving him without a buyout agreement to clear a roster space.

Davis would prefer not to give up more than the equivalent of the minimum salary for this and next season, so that he loses no money in the deal.  The Magic would prefer that he gives up more than that.  Were they desperate enough to get rid of him that they agreed to a minimal buyout that has them paying almost all of next year's salary or did they get more substantial savings?

because you have to pay him anyway and you might actually need him at some point (say Nicholson gets hurt tomorrow, then what).  because Orlando isn't going anywhere so anyway so there is no reason to make a move.

Why would you need any player without a future on your team if you're 'not going anywhere anyway'? they'd be better off testing d-leaguers should injury happen if they're not attempting to be truly competitive now.

And presumbly if they're willing to buy out Davis the day of the trade deadline, they'd already discovered there's zero market for him via trade.

We did win it, but in the end both teams are looking to get rid of them only half way through their deals. So I wouldn't be thumping our fan chests too hard about it.

At least we got the guy who isn't so bad we're buying him out.
I'm not down on Bass; while the team should get value for him if they can, it's OK if he's part of the team's future too. He's a useful veteran. We do have a PF logjam, but two of them are on rookie scale contracts next year, and one's expiring.

Sources told ESPN.com that Davis is the Nets' top choice for the opening in their frontcourt rotation. But Brooklyn's attentions could shift quickly back to Collins if the Nets miss out on Davis, who is being recruited hard to join the Los Angeles Clippers by former coach Doc Rivers.

Sources say Rivers and Nets forward Kevin Garnett are going head-to-head in a recruiting battle to try to convince Davis to join their respective teams.
The trio, of course, were all on the same side when the Rivers-coached Boston Celtics won the NBA title in 2008.

Glen Davis has moved close to committing to the Clippers, clearing way for Nets to sign Jason Collins, league sources tell Yahoo.

Is this real(?)  or is it a joke(?) about teams chasing BBD.

Nets just announced they will sign Jason Collins tonight.

What other free agent bigs should teams be chasing instead?

The Clippers traded Antawn Jamison and Byron Mullins.  Their lone big off the bench is Ryan Hollins.  They can play smallball with Matt Barnes and Hedo Turkoglu playing some PF.

Unless you think Ryan Hollins (or Matt Barnes playing out of position) is better than Glen Davis, the Clippers should be chasing him.

It is OK with me...chase away.  He looks to me to be in about the worst shape of his career.    I would hazard a guess that a lot of  the interest in him is manufactured by his agent.

I am not a Glen Davis fan...I don't see that his style of play or size will do anything to prevent a "small ball" style of basketball.

LA Clippers a bunch of circus clown shows.

Starting from Big Baby to Matt Barnes to CP3/Blake Griffin to Doc Rivers.

Its not about preventing other teams from going small, the Clippers can deal with that. Its about giving them another option than Hollins when teams are big and Blake/DeAndre are in foul trouble.

I think TB meant that the team with Big Baby is pushed toward playing small ball.
