A lot of board members feel the Celts next direction after using their lottery pick in this year's draft is to package their remaining assets for another franchise player; Kevin Love, LaMarcus Aldridge and others have been frequently mentioned as targets. Would it be more prudent for Ainge to try for another top five draft pick this year to pair with our own (potential) top five pick?
How much would it take to get that done? Depends on the team. Milwaukee's pick is untouchable. You'd have to blow away Orlando with an offer. But I think Philly, Sacramento, Cleveland and a few other teams would be willing to listen. If Sacramento had a top five pick, for example, I think Rondo and our second first rounder this year would be enough to get it done (if Rondo slowly returns to at least 70-80% by the season's close). If Philly or Cleveland had a top five pick, I think one or two of our younger players, our second first rounder this year, and our first rounder next year would be enough to get it done.
Who would you take if we had both picks? I believe the best course of action would be to take one upside guy and one sure-fire guy. Here's the split between the two categories within the consensus top six players.
Upside:
Embiid
Wiggins
Exum
NBA-ready:
Parker
Randle
Smart
It'd be pretty sweet if we took both Wiggins and Embiid and they lived up to their potential of T-Mac who plays defense and Olajuwon. But, I also don't want them to both wash out and become Jeff Green and Hasheem Thabeet.
So, here would be my wishlist in order:
1) Embiid/Parker
2) Wiggins/Parker
3) Wiggins/Smart
4) Embiid/Smart
I left out Exum and Randle because I believe as of right now, they're repetitive with Rondo and Sully on the roster. If we do the deal with Sacramento and use Rondo as a chip, however, Exum could certainly be in play. Same goes for Sully/Randle. Thoughts?
