I'm not sure why we would want him at this point in our rebuild. I would rather give those minutes to Faverani, Sullinger, and Olynyk to develop and build their value. We would gain nothing from giving playing time and a roster spot to an old 3rd string backup center who would eat more time from the young guys. We already have Bass, Lee and Wallace eating enough playing time from the young players as is.

while i agree with your points, i believe the author of this thread wanted collins as a celtics NOT to play a single minute, but to tutor the younger plays such as sully and olly and fav(y).

i think bringing in a mentor is a fine idea if the celtics stay under the tax limit.

but my question to the board is about collins as a mentor and tutor...is he really a good teacher? i have no idea on this.
I believe Gandhi is the only person who knew about real democracy — not democracy as the right to go and buy what you want, but democracy as the responsibility to be accountable to everyone around you. Democracy begins with freedom from hunger, freedom from unemployment, freedom from fear, and freedom from hatred.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
I'd rather have some young prospect like  Kris Joseph or Jeremy Tyler

I'd want to have him. But isn't he hurt?

Tutor them in what exactly? Just because a dude is old and is a nice guy in the locker room doesn't mean that he has anything of worth to offer.

I mean, I've loved how much Sully has gone out of his way to mention how much he's learned from Jason Collins last year, and how much impact it had on him becoming a pro...

What NBA level skill does Jason Collins have? Being 7 feet tall doesn't count.

"OH REALLLLYYYY?"

....says Kevin Willis, Elden Campbell, and Marcus Camby, as well as like 50 other guys.

I think signing Jason Collins makes a lot of sense for these 3 reasons:

1) Gives Boston good headlines in a bad headlines year.
-Boston will be one of the tankiest teams in a tanky kind of year. It'd be nice if there were positive Boston story that didn't focus 2 or 3 years in the future.

2) We could really use him
-Jason Collins is a locker room superhero. Much like Derek Fisher, Kurt Thomas, or Keyon Dooling. We do not have one of those guys right now. We do have Gerald Wallace's outer-inner monologue to resemble leadership , but that's like saying we need a car but have pow-pow-powerwheels

3) Our guys are young enough to accept it
-The majority of our guys are under 30, many are under 26. Nobody has anything to gain by making a stink about a gay man in the locker room. Beyond that, many of our guys have been brought up in a generation where that's not a big deal.

He's a decent defender. A team that needs one could use him. Clippers are thin at big man (and Doc loved Collins), and the Knicks need someone to replace what Chandler gave to them (though that might mean that they have to cut Smith's brother).

We don't need him, though. Already one big more than we need, and can't afford to go into taxpayer territory.

Collins was Washed up before last season---signing a guy JUST because he came out---and got headlines for it, is just ridiculous....Our young big guys need ALL the minutes they can get.

I guess Jason wants to play, and he'll probably get some offers in February/March.

But if he doesn't get the right offer and he's able to teach our bigs how to defend in the post, they'd better hire him as a big man coach. That way, you stay under the tax threshold and get Collins to train the kids.

Top 5 players in the NBA do not want to come to Boston. Collins will go to Brooklyn and lead the Nets to Jordan like heights
