  • No no no, not THAT "Eric M Van".
The front page and now Zach Lowe over on Grantland have some interesting comments about this trade and the state of second round picks, Salary dumping of expiring contracts and a few other things I found of interest in relation to the Celtics (else I would have put this in the NBA thread)

http://www.grantland.com/blog/the-triangle/post/_/id/72835/caron-butler-and-the-evolving-identity-of-the-salary-dump

What I found interesting:

1; His excitement about the Bucks keeping their 5 second round picks (there was an article recently on the front page about how valuable these are as opposed to late first rounders http://www.sbnation.com/nba/2013/8/15/4621594/nba-draft-europe-stash-2013)

2: Weak market for expiring contracts
The weak market for expiring contracts. This isn’t necessarily new, either. Teams aren’t dying to give up talented players on long-term contracts for backup types on expiring deals and picks — the model of trade that sent Pau Gasol to the Lakers.

3:The continued increase in the value of first-round picks. You are not sniffing a first-round pick, even a low one, for Caron Butler. It’s not happening right now, as teams hoard picks and enjoy the unmatched bang for the buck that comes from a player outperforming a cheap (and very long) rookie contract. (The comments about Utah not being able to come up for something for Jefferson and Milsap is interesting. What does this say about Humphries
contract?

Anyways, I found it interesting in terms of what people "think" the Celts will try to do with their unwanted assets.
"Because there are no fours."

"We're going to turn this team around 360 degrees."

interesting but I still think that as the deadline approaches, Hump will get interest from a strong contender that needs frontline help and would be willing to send a 1st rounder (2015/2016) that figures to be very low.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
What's the rush to get rid of Humphries? He's a double double guy when he plays consistent minutes. Depending on how well he defends he might end up a fan favorite. At the very least I think Rondo will like him on the floor.

thinking about him being a fan favorite kinda scares me...him as a player - meh, him as a person - hate him...

I am more worried about the locker room atmosphere between him and Rondo.

Humphries isn't my worry so much as Wallace and Bass.

Even late first-rounders are worth more than that.  To get a first-rounder for Humphries, you probably need a team that would be interested in signing Humphries to a long-term deal after this season and a contract lasting beyond this season that they want to jettison.

I think Humphries might have more use if he gets sent out with other assets at the deadline for a good player signed to a similarly sized contract on a team that intended to contend but has seen their season fall apart and have shifted into tank mode.

He shares a position with two young players and probably shouldn't be in the team's plans beyond the season unless you're planning on trading one of those young players.

Since he has an expiring contract, there is a shorter window for getting some sort of value for Humphries than there is with guys like Bass/Lee/Wallace, who arguably increase in trade value as they approach becoming expiring contracts.
