Does anyone else kind of wish that Iverson was on our team as our 3rd string center this year?

He just did things in the summer league I loved. he really gets after the ball on the boards, plays tough D, lays some massive screens and is a real brawler in the paint.

I don't know how many players on the other team literally went the other direction immediately when they bumped into this guy. He must be one of those guys that's built very strong for his size - like a Tony Allen type.

I like the kid and think he would make an excellent, long term, 3rd string center for us and I hope to see him back in green at least by next year.

He should be in Boston right now, not in Turkey. It seems to me that Danny picked Fab over Iverson for this season, and I dislike and disagree with that decision.

Fab Melo's deal is guaranteed for this year.

Its not Melo over Iverson, it was the Brazilian center over Iverson. Melo is a sunk cost at this point for the roster. Remember Washington had the option to take Melo instead of Collins and said no.

Well the only good thing in all of this, is we still have the rights to Iverson.  So let someone else pay his salary this year unless we have an injury, then maybe the C's bring him back.

Is the idea that even though Melo might not help us at all, since we are on the hook for his money, we are at least going to let him try to improve this year?  I guess getting our cap number down is more important than which inexperienced backup 3rd string center we have.

It doesn't get our cap number down though, its a roster spot issue. Anyone we could put in that spot is going to cost more than Iverson would have.

And the C's aren't going to waive Melo and eat the money to create another spot.

Yep.  I wanted Danny to find some way for him to stay here this year.  Sorry it didn't happen.

Yeah, agreed, would like to see him here. I hadn't seen much of him but after watching him in the summer league I liked him quite a bit.

Big screens, very physical, aggressive at all times and he just seems tough, tough, tough. Again, I was quite amused over the course of the summer league at how many times different players would kind of bounce off the guy and hit the floor. He looked like a brick wall when guys hammered into him.

I think he has the physical tools and the mindset to bang with almost anyone in the league right now. His talent level is marginal but I think he could be a good "Reggie Evans Type" player in time, just doing it for us at the center position. Love those types of guys as "part" of the mix.

I'm not super high on Fab, but still do hold out some hope - he's made some small improvements and he is a true seven footer.

I'm hoping the Celts are just stashing Iverson in Turkey so they can give Fab a lot of burn this year in hopes that he develops enough to get value out of him in a trade package for a legit, long term solution for us at center or he simply develops enough that he's worth keeping.

I think they already know what they have in Iverson.

I got really sick of watching us get pushed around once Perkins left and Rondo had to become our enforcer. I like being the team pushing people around and with Iverson, Sully, Bradley and Rondo, we've got a nice little core of tough guys at their positions.

I hadn't heard this. Washington refused Melo in favor of Collins?  That doesn't make sense to me.  Is this confirmed, is it common knowledge that I just missed, or is it hearsay?

I think it's hearsay.  I'm fairly sure the C's wanted to trade Wilcox instead of Collins, but Wilcox refused the trade, so Collins went.  Never heard about Fab at all.

The Wizards reportedly didn't want to take back any guaranteed money back for 2013-2014.  They just wanted to be rid of Crawford.

This is how it went down.

Iverson needs to actually play and become acclimated to a professional style of game. Regardless of how terrible the C's center situation is, he wasn't going to get that this year. Turkey makes the most sense, not for the sake of the roster limit, but to also give Iverson the opportunity to play with and against better players.

He was a late 2nd round pick for a reason. This wasn't going to be an Erden/Stiemsma situation because those two had KG to help them. Iverson won't have that, and he'd get destroyed in NBA games, much like how Fab Melo will be. Iverson needs to polish his game overseas while the C's see what they've got with Melo and Favereni.

Ladies CI is just being parked overseas for a year or two like the Spurs did with Tiago Spitzer. He will be brought back for the Summer League next year. He probably has a Buyout with the Turkish Team. Over there he will have plenty of time on the Court and can get more experience than sitting on the bench and we don't have to sign him to a contract right now. Remember a trade can still go down before Training Came as soon as Humphries, Wallace, etc, become available to trade after September 15th. I'm waiting until then to see what kind of Center, etc. we get for Humphries plus then?

I would have liked to see him stay.

I think if there is one position where you can never have enough bodies it's at center because those are the big guys who bang every day, who are putting heavy weight on their joints every day, etc.

Centers (or at least Celtics centers) seem to have a worse history for injuries than any other position, and yet it's such an important position because a center is tasked with protecting the paint from all of those easy, high-percentage shots around the basket that you never want to allow an opposing team to make.

We learned last year that when you don't have a shotblocking threat in the pain (either at PF or at C) you end up with giving the opposition free layups and trips to the line all night long, and when the opposition is getting high efficiency shots like that all night long you are doomed to fail.
