Per Red's Army: http://redsarmy.com/2013/07/15/was-fred-hoiberg-the-celtics-first-choice-for-head-coach/

Quote
According to Georges Niang of Iowa State, the Boston Celtics offered their head coaching job to Fred Hoiberg before they offered it to Brad Stevens.

Quote
Niang “I know he is committed to us. Even after Brad Stevens got the Celtics job, he texted me and said Boston offered me the job and I turned it down.”

Hmm I wonder if this is true. I'm not familiar with college basketball. Would he had been a good candidate?

Edit:

Apparently Niang said it as a joke  ???  ::)..ok I don't get it..lol

This doesnt quite sound like 'joke' material so Id say one of the following three people are lying:

Place your bets

Danny Ainge (dont know if he ever publicly said this but someone said Hoiberg was #2)
Fred Hoiberg
Georges Niang (ISU AD?)

The joke is that Hoiberg would never have turned the job if it had actually been available.

C/PF-Horford, Baynes, Noel, Theis, Morris,
SF/SG- Tatum, Brown, Hayward, Smart, Semi, Clark

Really weird thing to say.

Danny probably called Hoidberg to sound him out? Dunno.

  • A true Celtic plays with heart.
Call BS on this. You're telling me a young coach who just got offered the head coaching turned it down? Hard to believe honestly... And Stevens is one of the most loyal guys. He got offered so many coaching positions.

Not a lie, just a very weird joke. I didn't watch the video in the article so I don't know if it sounded or looked like he was joking. But again, he could be lying about it being a joke..who knows.

This guy's quote and following retraction are classic CYA material. If this was a joke, whats the punchline and how is this in anyway funny?

Not that it matters, but Id guess its true that Hoiberg was offered first and this wasnt supposed to be put out there.  Hoiberg has NBA creds and a working history with both Bird and McHale.  Wouldnt surprise me at all.

The joke is that you are saying something that is so ridiculous that it is obviously false while acting as if it is true.

If done right, it can be funny.

But it's not that ridiculous and far fetched. I guess that's why I'm confused as to how it should have been thought as a joke first. It doesn't really matter anyways I guess.

Yes I completely get what you are saying.  The nuance isnt lost on me, however the interviewer doesnt seem to agree with this perspective:

Does it make it clearer that it was intended as a joke if I pointed out that Georges Niang is an Iowa State player who will be a sophomore next season?

Niang joked that Hoiberg turned down the Celtics job because he had had enough of Boston just from dealing with Niang, who is from Methuan, MA.

So, the joke is a) the ridiculous idea that Hoiberg would turn down the Celtics job and b) that Niang is obnoxious enough to make his coach want nothing to do with Boston.
