“I tell you what, he does some interesting stuff. I was telling our guys that it’s been a long time since I’ve seen a guy get an offensive rebound and just quick lay it over the rim like he did out there. No one else reacted. You play by yourself when you do that, because people aren’t reacting like you are.
“He’s learned how to play step-throughs, pump fakes and stuff. I mean, he does a lot of interesting stuff. And for a young kid, he’s got good vision.
“He’s just a very nice, nice player. He does a lot of old-school stuff.”
And get this: McHale, who is now entrusted with getting inside Dwight Howard’s head (best of luck, Kev), thinks Olynyk’s game will improve concurrently with the level of competition.
“Watching him at Gonzaga, I always liked him. But I always though, geez, is he athletic enough?” McHale said. “You always had questions.
“But watching him here, his ability with more spacing on the floor and how the NBA game is played is magnified. His intelligence actually shows more here than it did in college.
“The NBA game is spaced better, and he’s going to be able to play his game better in that kind of situation. I just like him.”
Olynyk has found that to be the case thus far.
“Definitely,” he said. “You can’t sit in the key because of the (defensive three-second) rules, and the 3-point line is that much farther out. The floor’s definitely way more open, so I think it helps not only me but a lot of guys who can create for themselves and space the floor and knock down shots.
“Now guys have to guard people like that, and it opens the floor for other guys. I think it’s kind of a give-take relationship, and I think I can benefit and your team can benefit from it.”
The belief here is that Olynyk will have some issues matching up defensively with some of the speedier bigs he’ll find up here. But no doubt he’ll catch some people off-guard at the other end of the floor with his own moves.
“His ability to do things very, very quickly and create space for himself,” said McHale, “is really, really impressive.”
