You don't bring in the winingest coach in college basketball to tank. As Ainge said "this is the Celtics". At the same time it is a signal that he is not in a rush. Stevens wants to win as does Ainge. If Stevens rises the challenge Ainge will not leave him hanging.

Classic low risk, high reward move; but similar in a way to taking Bird a season early.

I agree completely. Management will prob tank by trading the vets , bringing back rondo slowly, but i doubt stevens pulls a ml carr and sits a player who is on fire in the 4th quarter. Hr might at worse give everyone more of a chance to play

I don't think they will purposely throw games, DA has seen that doesn't work. It seems that it would indicate he will go young and build assets. If we get lucky in the draft great, but you just can't count on that.

Danny Ainge wouldn't hire a coach that wasn't on board with bottoming out this year.  Stevens knows what's expected of him in his first season.  It's also why he received such a shockingly long contract.

better than Vinnie del. which in my mind is just hoisting the white flag,

his hiring, sends amore positive signal to players and fans alike


signals a positive rebuild for C's .......I sorta remember hiring Pitino being a super new change

Just have to see , if  Brad has then stick to his guns attitude and never say die pit bull mentality it will require to survive ,  maybe we will get a shot at a title

Either way, if  he makes it or not ,  he probably is a great choice to coach young players fresh out of college,   

if he does well,  Danny will trade assets ands find him a couple super stars to join the ranks and make a title run.

The Celtics were just old and time to start fresh with me faces.all around.

Brad,  could get these kids to play together , you never know.

You could get cheaper more known coach's that could tank for a couple years. So I don't think Tanking is the goal.

It doesn't mean as of right now they are winning, but the team will grow, the young guys will play a ton and develop and if a top 10 pick comes out of that this year so be it.

But Im also wondering what else if up DA's sleeve. He said that he was excited about the rebuild. Well heres the new coach every one is talking about that you are paying a good amount of money to for 6 years. Are there ay players coming as well?

I know he said no big FA moves, he also said that about the draft. See Boston isn't quite bad enough to easily get a top 3, but also not good enough to make the playoffs. But they could also JUST make the playoffs, because Im seeing Orlando,Charlotte,Milwaukee,Toronto,Philly,Washington, all in better position with Atlanta and Detroit not far behind, all depending on what happens in FA.

Im wondering if DA is circling the other bottom feeders seeing what teams who are in better position to tank are getting rid of. Getting other teams involved with trades, using their extra pics as bait.

You know unless a big name comes around DA going to keep both 2014 pics. And probably will keep Brooklyns 2016 pic. But everything else he's be willing to give up for the right players.

I agree with this. Stevens can very easily be our Vogel or Spoelstra. Both of them were also young coaches with no prior professional coaching experience, but they're great player development guys who trust their players (but not to the expense of just letting them run amok a la Del Negro), and turn their team into winners.

Two big concerns strike me with Stevens, however: handling big ego's (i.e. Rondo), and the shortened shot clock

Everything else about his coaching ability really impresses me though, and he has a very realistic shot at being one of the few college coaches who successfully make the jump to the NBA.

I've been in the "tank just this one year camp," finishing the tanking set up by simply sitting Rajon through 2013. I both have believed we would do this and felt it was the best thing to do; felt it maximized the effect of the recent trade by nearly assuring a high 2014 pick. We may still do that but this is a hire that means we will try to win every single game we play. Unlike Doc's teams, there is NO way we will be watching a bunch of guys sleep walk through games.

So, it is what it is. Unless we trade more vets away, this has made it more likely we win too many games to end up with a top 5 pick. I'm happy about it anyway.

He will be allowed to show what he can do with a young team and Rondo will get to see if he can be a leader. Can't afford free agents yet; but expect Danny to consolidate the Roster after Summer league.

Rumor of Nolan Smith joining team for Summer League is encouraging. Mainly will be important for PG (Presey, Momo Jone) and PF/Centers (Melo, Olynyk and Iverson).

Right where I was, and where I'm now at too.  Happy about the hire, come what may with the draft pick.

Danny wants somebody to oversee the rebuild.  I think tanking will probably be part of that rebuild, but Stevens is intended to be here for the long haul.  He's not M.L. Carr.

We're probably tanking, and because it's so out in the open we're going to have bad ju-ju and end up with the 5th pick again.

That being said, I think Danny and Stevens both expect this to be a transition year for him and they're both happy to accept the bumps and bruises of being a young, rookie head coach.
