However, I don't agree with the 40 win assessment. That's literally impossible, even with Rondo. We're going to be winning around 30 games, which is bad, but not bad enough to beat out someone like Philly or Charlotte for a serious chance at a top 5 lottery pick.
Rondo recovers fully and ahead of schedule. Jeff Green does at least as well as the 20.1p/5.9r/2.9a in 35mpg during his 17 starts last season. Jared Sullinger is a 15/10 guy with a mid-range jumper. Avery Bradley shows that 2012 wasn't a fluke and he can be an All-Defensive guy who makes 40% of his threes. Kelly Olynyk can play adequate defense and shows he can hit threes as a stretch four. The Celtics sign a scrapheap center who gives them 9 points and 7 rebounds per game with decent defense. It turns out Doc Rivers was a bad coach who was holding his players back and many players thrive without him.
Each of those could happen. All of them happening is near-impossible. More than half of them happening is within the realm of possibility. If the possible happens, the Celtics could be a borderline playoff team, especially if other borderline playoff teams decide to tank.
