an excellent scouting video of Olynyk. Better than draftexpress version. The commentator says three things alot about olynyk. Lack of "explosiveness" and also "sees the floor well" "anticipates well".

From some clips of the video he definitely looks like he sees the floor well (i guess being a fomer pg and playing qb for his school also helps) and definitely anticipates well. For those terribly worried about his defense, well watch the video. His basic defense is superb. Looks like a solid team defender and never stops moving.  On offense, he has alot of moves and knows the angles ala Al Jefferson. But in the nba i can't see him being effective in the post area. Unless he goes up against guys like Carl Landry, Faried, guys who are shorter in height he can take adv on.  Still he will be able to pull his man out on top of the key, drive in for a layup, or drive stop and shoot or pass it. He looks like a superb passer. Sully is also a great passing big guy. It will be interesting to see what happens whey they play at the same time.

I think in time as he gains experience he is going to play the same role Nowitzki has played for the mavs. They are not exactly the same players. But what they do have in similiarities are both are co ordinated/7 ft in height, able to play on the perimeter and torch bigger and/or athletic pf's. In addition pull them out underneath the net and make it easier for others to drive in. Nowitzki though really a SF has always played as a PF in the NBA. When dallas won it all a few years back, it was Chandler doing more of the dirty work downlow while Nowitzki was playing the pf spot dizzying his opponents. So teams would try to cheat and put a real sf against Dirk, and he would then religiously post them up and score easily around the basket. This is the type of unique adv olynyk could have in time

The lack of explosiveness is not really a worry. At least he has the basics down. Unlike Melo he has explosiveness but is ways away from the "basics". I think of the explosiveness as a luxury, good to have but not mandatory. Unless an opponent can score over him and also shoot the three, i'm not too worried, bc there are only a few pf/c that can do these things in the league.

Did the narrator watch the vid prior to narrating it ???

"O.K. now this is gonna be one of his good points.....ooops didn't get that one"

"Now in the N.B.A. he should be able to....oh that try got blocked"

I just got freaked. Thanks Narrator guy (a.k.a some kid in media lab who got beat up by Olynyk in the 5th grade)

Wow, is it possible to give -1 TP ? Because the first 3 answers deserve it.
Obviously they are blind or they only believe in big dunks and big 3s.
The guy is unconventional, he'll get an edge over most of his opponents with his skills. Yes he's not super athletic or entertaining. But he will be efficient.

Kelly Olynyk our new point forward.  I see why Ainge feels comfortable dealing ainge.  A seven foot playmaker who can see the floor and shoot well from the perimeter will be interesting to see.

Thanks for posting this; I hadn't seen it before.

A bunch of examples of Isaiah Austin facing him up. OK, I can live with that. At 7'1", when Austin comes to the NBA next year, he will be one of the longest players in the league and facing up is his whole game.

In that Baylor game, Olynyk went 9-12 from the field and scored 21 points in 23 minutes. Austin is ridiculously long and athletic, and might be a top 10 draft pick. Olynyk bullied him nicely.

A bunch of examples of Olynyk plodding into traffic and forcing something up. I like that he seeks out contact, but yeah he's going to face some serious adversity in the NBA. Hopefully gets more space in the NBA that he can take advantage of with his passing, and fewer double teams.

Im wondering if some of his awkwardness and athletic issues comes from how much he grew in a short time. He had to learn how to use his new body. Could get a little better over the next couple years while he refines his motor skills and muscle.

I've seen some better video's and he looks solid. I like how when he receives the ball going to the hoop he keeps it high.

He also seems to know were he is on the floor and turns and shoots before the defender gets in position. When he rolls to the paint and hes back to, he catch's and turns right away and shoots really quick. That helps his lack of athletics.

Good floor awareness. Makes really smart plays and passes, and has his head up all the time.

DA was smart with this pic. Yeah there were some better athletes and some players with more upside. But in a league full of that its good to have a couple high IQ players on the team as well.

Could this be the second coming of Scal? :P

Don't be too demanding of someone who couldn't spell Olynyk's name right in the video title.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Man, if Kelly Oh averaged 10 points/5 rebounds/48% shooting or better in 20 minutes a game I'd be so happy.

So in other words..she's not the prettiest girl at the dance, nor is she the smartest, and she could bear to shed a few pounds, but dog gone it she has a great personality :(

i guess so. Better than a 6'0 foot center.

Three things i'm looking forward about Olynyk is his IQ, Motor and skills regardless of his height. Its a relief also to know he is a good enough defender.

Actually, no. He barely manages to edge college opposition, and looks anything but smooth but doing so. I fully expect that those unconventional, borderline moves will not at all once he faces bigger, stronger, more aware NBa opposition.

Well, here's to hoping I'm wrong.
