The Boston Celtics shuffled up to No. 13 to grab Gonzaga 7-footer Kelly Olynyk after a trade with the Dallas Mavericks. Boston sent its No. 16 pick and two future second-round draft picks to the Mavericks to move up.

Olynyk averaged 17.8 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 1.1 blocks over 26.4 minutes per game during his junior season at Gonzaga. But it's his advanced metrics that really raised eyebrows. According to Synergy Sports data, Olynyk averaged 1.131 points per play, ranking in the 95th percentile among all Division 1 players. A whopping 21.6 percent of his plays came in the post and he averaged 1.067 points per play (93rd percentile). For a Boston team that craves size and scoring ability, Olynyk appears to fit a need (regardless of how the roster looks next season). His 36.57 Player Efficiency Rating (PER) led the nation this past season.

It's on the defensive end where he'll need a Celtics immersement. Olynyk allowed 0.818 points per play and ranked merely in the 54th percentile. Opponents took advantage of his lack of strength in the post and he needs to be a better rebounder.

The Celtics selected Brazilian center Lucas Nogueira for the Mavericks, who were expected to send him on to Atlanta in a separate trade.

The ESPN Insider breakdown on Olynyk's strengths and weaknesses:

    Positives
    * Big man with versatile game
    * Can score with his back to the basket
    * Solid perimeter game with 3-point range
    * Very efficient scorer
    * Good motor, especially on the offensive end

    Negatives
    * Needs to add strength/toughness
    * Mediocre rebounder/shot-blocker
    * Can be turnover prone

wait so we got a big FINALLY who will post up and score on the block plus he can SHOOT THREES? and people are not happy? R U freaking kidding me?
LET'S GO CELTICS!

I'm not very happy with the pick, but I'm keeping an open mind. Hoping Olynyk can prove me wrong.

I can't stop thinking about Raef LaFrentz right now.

Was Olynyk not going to be there at #16? Dallas was supposedly desperate to move that pick. Why did Ainge give up two 2nd rounders to move up?

Nick Fazekas (rich man's version)?!

I thought Dieng was the guy!

Roberson 1st round! Wanted him in a 2nd round trade or undrafted FA.

Incredibly multidimensional. He can run the floor too. Very quick for his size (as he was a guard before his growth spurt). The more I think about it, the more I love this pick.

7 feet tall...we actually got a talented 7 footer on the Celtics!!!

If Fab Melo can pan out and make the roster at least next season, our front court is going to be really good. Lots of nice, young prospects that we can give playing time to.

And for those wringing their hands over the two 2nds, just like that the C's bought themselves a 2nd-rounder tonight.

I was against this guy from day 1.

But recently i've warmed up to him watching some Gonzaga games. And realized also there was a reason why the team was one of the three top team in the whole div 1 in the regular season. Olynyk was a big part of that.

Look at it this way. If Gonzaga didn't get upset by Wichita State (and Olynyk again had a good game), and the team keeps moving forward and Olynyk kept producing, he would of prob been chosen alot higher.  The upset was a blessing in disguise

Now my take on Olynyk is that he is a unique player. Has great size , post game, shooting and guard like skills offensively. Considered one of the two best offensively skilled pf/c (other being Muscala). Defensively he is a very good "positional" "team" defender". But don't expect him to be the "man".
If he can get leaner, stronger no doubt that will help with his explosiveness. He is taylor made to play pf in the nba. Good co ordination, iq and motor. He can be an off bench guy now, but again if he can gain another level of explosiveness he could be a starter in the nba.

When i think of Sully and Olynyk, i think of two "ugly body" players that possess old school games, technical, well coached, high iq, motor, toughness and winner.  Could end of being a hell of a pick in a year or two, to worse case come off the bench and be a 6 rebound, 8-10 points consistantly guy

I am interesting to see how his game transfers over. He is a hard worker, so he'll have some success i am sure.

yeah. His motor is excellent. He plays with passion which is another thing i like. The one thing i dislike is his hair and he needs a new barber

I like Olynyk. I think some people need to lower their expectations for the 16th or even 13th pick in a weak draft.

Olynyk has been described as the most offensively-ready-for-the-NBA big man in this draft ... which means that if he had been even a decent defensive player, we never would've had a shot at him.

Considering how often the Cs have been inept on offense over the last several seasons, and that they haven't had a single legit low-post threat since KG drifted outside, and that they've been so desperate for 7-footers that they relied on Ryan freakin' Hollins two seasons ago, I can't see how this is a bad pick.

As a related aside: I find it funny that certain people are totally fine with all-defense/no-offense players such as TA and Bradley—and rarely express concern about the team lacking so badly in scoring—but they have a big problem with all-offense/no-defense players. The league is full of one-dimensional types, which is why you have a TEAM of complementary parts. Whenever you have a player who's great on offense AND defense, he doesn't fall to the No. 13 pick. So why are some people acting as though we could've gotten the next KG at No. 13?

Speaking as an average-looking white guy with long hair (longer than Olynyk's, actually), I'm stoked to see him in Green.  ;D

I keep hearing "Scola" as a reference point. I think it might be the hair, but if this dude ends up as the next Scola for us that would be great.

He will be better than Scola. Scola can't move as well and doesn't have the dribbling nor passing skills as Olynyk.

Olynyk is basically a sf that lacks quickness nor athleticism of a sf, but has the size of a pf. In the nba he will have to play the pf position.  Nowitzki is another guy who has size but is not all that quick nor athletic. Though i would argue he is very agile for his height, is quicker than Olynyk by a bit and has advanced offensive skills.

Olynyk at peak could be a nowitzki out of the pf position. If that happens, danny will come out as a genius
