Dwight is friends with Rondo and Smith.  If the rumors that Dwight is leaving are true, maybe Atlanta can sell Dwight on forming a trio with Rondo and Smith in his hometown.

So given that hypothesis, I think a reasonable trade for both teams is

Horford, L. Williams, Teague (S&T 4 yrs, 36-40 million), 2014 1st (lotto protected)

for

Rondo, Lee, Melo/Sullinger, Crawford, Williams, Randolph, White

I believe the numbers should work out depending on where Teague starts.

That would give Boston a very strong roster next year, get the team younger, and pick up an extra first in the 2014 draft.

So Boston would be

PG - Teague, Bradley, Terry
SG - Pierce, Williams, Bradley
SF - Green, Pierce
PF - Horford, Bass, Sullinger or Melo
C - Garnett, Wilcox, Sullinger or Melo

In addition to the 2013 1st and any free agents.  That would be a pretty dangerous team if PP and KG could provide anything even remotely close to their primes in the playoffs.

+1...Love the idea....had proposed similar with Horford/Teague and Rondo as principles...

Think we  don't have to include Sully, though....

we have leverage in that Smith could walk for nothing...

This is very far from a fair offer for Atlanta.  Horford would probably command slightly more than Rondo on the trade market straight up, given that they are comparable in talent relative to their position, but size (Horford) is much harder to acquire and Rondo is coming off of major surgery.  Then Lou Williams is a useful player on a decent contract and Teague is a very useful and promising player on a very good contract.  Lee is considered to be on a bad contract and the Wizards were willing to give away Crawford for nothing last season, which shows what his value really is.

There is something to the general idea though.  Maybe something more like:

Rondo, Lee, Sullinger, future protected first round pick

Horford, Teague

I still don't know if Atlanta acceps that.  Is that any better than just keeping Horford and Teague and rolling with a lineup of Teague, Smith, Horford, and Howard?

The trade is pretty interesting lotta guys involved not sure how feasible.

I don't think Howard is friends with Rondo either. Is he?

I agree on its face it is a hosing (and I made the trade), but the only reason Atlanta does this is to sign Dwight Howard.  They don't just make this trade in a vaccuum, but if making the trade directly allows them to sign Dwight, then it takes the trade to a different place.

Exactly.

Look at the trade as Horford and Teague for Dwight and Rondo.

That should seem more palatable.

I just don't think Atlanta deals Horford. I WISH though.

I would love to have Horford.

So you're winning the trade somewhat but you're creating a team in your conference with a young-ish core that (when healthy) is better than your team for the foreseeable future.

Yeah, but, I can easily see a team of Rondo, Smith, and Howard totally imploding.

If Dwight is leaving LA, it's for Dallas or Houston. Personally, I think it's going to be Houston.

The only reason he considered Atlanta is because of a possible uniting with CP3. That is obviously off the table now, and there's no incentive for Dwight to sign there when he has his Texas options.

Agreed. I think Houston is such an attractive opportunity, I really think they can nab him if they can move Robinson to clear cap. Dallas is always going to be attractive because of Mark Cuban, but Houston already has nice, young pieces in place with Harden and Parsons.

Yeah, NBA free agency isn't that simple. Dwight also has friends in Houston and they're in a much more attractive position right now. Plus, you have to factor in the taxes (or the lack thereof) in Texas.

Josh Smith is bolting Atlanta - that's also his hometown, and he's been miserable playing there. A lot of people seem to think he'll meet with Atl as a courtesy but its a distant, distant third.

It should also be noted that playing in one's hometown seems to be pretty low on the list of priorities for NBA players right now. Lebron ditching Cleveland, DWill choosing Brooklyn over Dallas.
