I'm curious what CB thinks of this topic.

Who would fit the best, and how would we obtain them?

I'm praaaying we can get a true 5 with talent.

IF you want the team to remain mostly in tact, there are none.  Your best hope is Fab Melo, or maybe Stiemsma if you think he was any good.

Now, if the right trade were available, then it's possible.  But there are no saviors on the free agent market who will come to Boston, unless 8-10 other teams didn't want them first.

I'd throw out Elton Brand as a PF/C who can spend some time at the 5.

JJ Hickson is an excellent name you brought up. I really like his work ethic as he's really improved his mid-range game. He's also crashing the boards like no other and was a double-double beast for Portland last year.

Ideally he's a high-energy big off the bench, which is a role that is likely opening up since it's clear Ainge is looking to get another starting big to put next to KG. Hickson solves a huge need in rebounding, and he's still young and continuing to improve. I haven't heard much about him in rumors yet so I'm not sure what sort of price we'd be looking at, but Hickson is certainly someone to be considered.

need to draft one of the bigs that can play Step in and play or contribute right away.  the draft is the cheapest way to get help and young too .

unless DA has some sort of master plan to draft a guard ,  to trade to another team for a center or low post man

one way or another......Danny has to come up with a legit big , no matter. KG status,    Fab just isn't ready to to start in the NBA.

having no center is a sure fire way to tank.    see the Magic and big baby

Danny Ainge is checking up again on Greg Oden soon to see where he's at physically.

Hickson would be a great addition (he played his ass off out of position at the 5 this year for the Blazaers), but he'll likely be priced out of what we can offer him.

Since we are no longer in a mode where we are trying to contend in a meaningful way, threads like this are moot. Who cares who plays at center and we certainly shouldn't be looking to expend assets on any sort of veteran short term replacement. Even drafting for need is a big mistake. We need to collect assets as best we can and we should not be overly concerned about making sure we have playoff caliber centers or not. Kaman, JJ, Dalembert... OK, it would useful to have those guys around 2-3 years ago, but I could frankly care less if any of these guys are on our roster for 2013/14, and would NEVER pay up to get them in.

I think that the best fit for us is going to depend on what kind of team we are building.

Most of the free agent centers are of the slower, half-court, banging-in-the-paint variety. I'm talking here about Pekovic, Jefferson, Bynum.

If we want someone who will play up-tempo, like if we're building around Josh Smith, Mozgov might be useful for us.

I guess Nikola Vucevic doesn't count.
