NBA source says Paul Pierce's family is preparing for relocation from Boston

Over the past 24-48 hours, there has been much talk of Paul Pierce having played his last game in a Celtics uniform after an article that was published by Yahoo's Kelly Dwyer, which reported what I consider to be a lot of speculation by CSNNE's Greg Dickerson on Pierce's situation. I tried not to think much of it because it was many people discussing what they thought would happen as opposed to citing concrete sources. Plus I didn't want to believe that we would be without the Truth next year.

However, today the Boston Globe released a piece that mostly reported on Doc Rivers returning to the Celtics, but one paragraph caught my eye about Pierce's family already making preparations to relocate from Boston:

The Celtics have to decide by June 30 whether to buy out Pierce’s contract at $5 million. Ainge said the sides have not had discussions, but an NBA source said Pierce’s family is already beginning to prepare for relocation from Boston, assuming that the Celtics will execute the buyout or trade his expiring contract in the offseason.

The article doesn't cite what specific NBA source gave this report on Pierce's situation. For all we know it could just be more speculation. But often in these situations, where there is smoke, there is fire.

I personally want to see Pierce retire a Celtic after all of his dedication and loyalty to the team, especially when the Celtics were at their worst. But I am getting the impression that Pierce will not be with the team next season. At least Pierce claims that if he's traded, he will come back to Boston before he hangs it up on a one day contract so he can retire a Celtic. And he deserves to.

I think the writing is on the wall here, and I think it sucks.

I agree the writing is on the wall, but I kinda see it similar as the Ray Bourque situation.  Pierce is still very capable of helping a competing team but we can't provide him a chance to win it all.

As much as I tell myself I'll be okay watching Pierce in a new uniform next year, I doubt I'll actually be okay when it happens.

My thought, though, is if Ainge cant find a trade for Paul Pierce that makes sense for both sides, he's just going to bring him back. It doesnt really do as much for the Celtics to waive him, as it does to bring him back to put fans in the seats.

There is 0% chance i am cool with this. Pierce is my favorite player of all time. I am 22. I have watched the Celtics since i was 11 and that was 01'. I will be really upset not to see him in a Celtics uniform. But like Roy said there seems to be writing on the wall. I just wonder what moves we'll make.

What I really hate about this is I have not seen a single good trade rumor.

Does that mean we get a parade if he wins it all next season?

As much as I love PP , I think it is time

Green absolutely has to play 35+ mins a night . PP is so old and slow now . Yes it would have probably helped PP to have Rondo in the playoffs , but he is the go to guy on the team, and you can't count on him as that anymore .

I would rather have Green or Rondo taking the last shot at this point in their Career . At least they can create space , or drive to the hoop .

PP simply can't beat his man of the dribble anymore .

I wouldn't mind bringing him back as 6th man if he was bought out for 5 mil , and cleared waivers . Doubt that would happen though....

Doesn't Pierce's family prepare every year to summer in Los Angeles after the kids get out of school in Massachusetts. Unless Pierce has put his house on the market, which would be public record, I can see a reporter being grossly wrong about this.

Yes i would be happy to take him as a 6th man but doesn't seem like there is much of a chance of that.

Good point.

One thing to remember is that if he goes, and has a cup of coffee somewhere else, that will all be forgotten pretty quickly. He'll always be remembered as a "career" Celtic.

What kind of cap situation does this put us at if say he is bought out and KG retires? Could we buy KG out of his contract to make more room? I think this would be the only thing to make me feel better. Meaning if Pierce is gone we have someone to sign for the now to help compete with this roster and for the future.

Makes me think that if he goes it'll be via the waiver route.

Also, I am much more comfortable with this as part of a tanking strategy than as part of some rebuild on the fly strategy, or one where we keep KG and make "one last run." Pierce has more value in the last strategy than anyone we could acquire for him IMO.

Yep. It's going to sting to lose Pierce regardless but something that would ease the stinging a bit is getting a decent return for him. We aren't landing anything such as Barnes like people have fantasized but maybe something else.

I will say this though, whatever team Pierce ends up on will automatically become my 2nd favorite team.
