A different take on Wingspan.
Would you rather have Sullinger stand Seven feet tall and have a terrible wingspan 6'8" like Zellar.
Or would you rather have Sully be 6'8" like he is but have a wingspan of over 7'1" like he does.
I myself would take the 7' Sully with alligator arms. A seven foot sully with his strength would be perfect. Even with the short arms. I think something to remember with all the talk about length, is for big guys especially their eyes are 4" higher than that of a 6'8" guy. I big advantage.
I think his physical attributes will be a good advantage (but not a dominant advantage) for C.Zeller at the PF position in a power-based offense but I would expect him to be a disadvantage for him at the C position.
I think C.Zeller would need either more bulk (to outmuscle more athletic fives) or quickness (to be like G.Monroe) to be as effective offensively, to create matchup problems for opponents, at the center position versus the big forward slot. Also, PF vs C, due to his deficiencies as a defender/rebounder. Inability to protect the basket at a high level.
I think he will need to move to PF position full time to fulfill his potential at the NBA level. And he will need to round out his offensive game with a mid-post and high post game (jump shot and passing skills) to make that transition. Which is part of the reason why I liken him to Laettner.
Even though the skill-set isn't quite there yet, I think it is the next natural progression of Cody Zeller's game is developing that mid-post to high-post game to allow his transition to PF at the NBA level. I think that will be his best position in the pros.
And, I think Cody Zeller will be a nice 16-18ppg and 8rpg guy at the PF slot like Laettner was for the first 5-6 years of his career before he tore his achilles.
So, I see his size advantage and skilled low post game at 7-0 240lbs at PF being the superior advantage matchup wise for his team. His best long term position.
