This Celtic trade was about nothing more than shedding $600,000 worth of salary. That's it.

The team is spending no more money this year. They know they can't win a title without Rondo, so they shed salary in an attempt to get under the luxury tax and now will stand pat and ride out the year with what they have hoping to get everyone back healthy next year and give it one last shot at 18 with this group.

Sorry, but that's not going to happen. We'll have a full roster one way or another.

This is so funny. Mostly because it isn't true.

The league subsidizes a portion of the veteran minimum, and with 28 games left, Collins has maybe 300,000 remaining on his contract.

can't be mad at Danny.  If i'm the GM of another team, i'm not giving up a quality big man for a package surrounding Avery Bradley, Jared Sullinger, Bass or Green.   That's one of those "pu pu platter" trades that Simmons keeps talking about.  I should lose my job if I gave up Marcin Gortat for Brandon Bass and Jared Sullinger.

I completely disagree.  They will fill out the roster.

Exactly what the team needed, another guard. This is a deal that does nothing for the team this year, but maybe it will help as Danny begins to rebuild in the offseason. I cannot believe the big man rotation on this team is now KG, Bass, Wilcox and Fab Melo. It is almost laughable. How anyone thinks this team has any opportunity to win a championship just blows my mind.

And yet the league does not subsidize the $865,000 both Collins and Barbosa are paid by the C's. With only $1.1 million coming in, the C's saved $600,000 of money they would have to report to the league as salary come the last day of the year.

If the deal was solely about saving money, they just would have shipped Barbosa and/or Collins to a team like the Cavaliers or Kings, along with some money to pay the remainder of their contracts this year.  They would have saved a lot more money.

I think the team likes Crawford better than, essentially, nothing.  This is supported by the above, but also by the fact that they're going to be paying him $2.2 million guaranteed next year.

Um, sorry, that's not how it works. NBA players are paid per game.

So that means we shipped out $600,000 total on Barbosa and Collins' contracts, taking back about $375,000 on Crawford's contract (if that's how you want to do the math). $225,000 in total savings.

Luxury tax is calculated on the money on your cap on the last day of the regular season.  For that calculation, the league looks at the total annual salary of the guys on your roster, plus any waived players who cleared waivers.  However, they don't consider the salaries of any players traded away.

It's a funky way of doing things, but I think that practice is what nick is saying.  We saved some money on our luxury tax.  However, we could have saved more by just not taking back salary.

Guard was the bigger need for this year.  You have Bradley, Terry, and Lee and that's really it.  Now you have 4 guards, 3 small forwards (Pierce, Green, Williams) and 4 bigs (KG, Wilcox, Bass, Melo)

Thats not deep enough up front at all, but how were they going to go through the playoffs with just 3 guards?  At least Green can get some minutes at PF.

Next year, you get Sullinger and Rondo back, so you have 13 total guys to start with.

Is there anyone in the D-league that could be a decent 12th man this year and an emergency power forward?

James Mays, Luke Harangody, Samardo Samuels, ???

What about this Rick Jackson kid that plays for Austin.  It looks like the Warriors own his rights.  What would it take to get him in green?

Crawford has shown some ability to fill up the stat sheet on a poor team. That's something to work with, especially on a team that has three guards under contract for next season, with one of them coming off a knee surgery. He's also on the books for cheap.

An overlooked aspect of this trade is that Crawford automatically becomes the best PG on the team.

They need much more than an "emergency power forward."  How about a guy that can actually play and get rebounds?

No question the Celtics are lacking in size now. KG, Wilcox, Green and Bass are the front court, but bigs are hard to pry loose from teams, a lot harder than disgruntled guards like Jordan Crawford.

Well, Danny created a wee bit more cap space for this year. Maybe he can still squeeze in one or two more guys at the min. A D-leaguer, a player from a foreign team who's season has ended, or somebody that gets bought out or waived is about the only places left Danny can look. Mighty slim pickings!

I read that San Antonio decided not to trade Blair because they felt they could get equal or better value in a sign and trade in the summer than they were able to get now at the trade deadline.
