From Wojo via Yahoo Sports:

Quote
David Stern will step down as NBA commissioner on Feb. 1, 2014, league sources told Yahoo! Sports.

Deputy commissioner Adam Silver will replace Stern.

Stern sent an email to key NBA executives that he's retiring, and that the Board of Governors has picked Silver to replace him.

"The Board has selected Adam Silver to succeed me as NBA Commissioner, and I am very pleased with their choice," Stern said in the email. "As you know, Adam is a world-class business executive who has influenced so many areas of our business during his 20-year tenure with the league, from television, to digital, to international, to merchandising, to sponsorships, to team business, to, of course, labor negotiations. I know that the organization will be in very good hands when Adam becomes Commissioner.

"What we have achieved together and will continue to achieve is extraordinary – and we will have 15 months to talk about it."

Stern, 70, began working with the NBA in 1966 as an outside counsel. He became commissioner in 1984.

Say what you will about the man but he did do one hell of a job promoting the game of basketball globally.

Definitely the right time, though.  The whole thing with him putting the kibosh on ESPN hiring Stan Van Gundy seemed really petty and vindictive.  It's time he took a step back from the game for both the games and his own sake.

Agreed.  Like him or hate him (which most here do), the guy did wonders for the NBA and increasing its popularity.    He is majorly responsible for globalizing the game.

That being said, he stayed about 5-7 years past his shelf life IMO.

Kinda similary career arc to Gene Defilipo at BC.  Both did great things but towards the end really outstayed their welcome and in my opinion were detrimental to their organizations.

Not ready to put Geno in the same breath as Stern.

NBA is in a lot better shape going forward than Boston College athletics is.

Thank God, hopefully the next one will put integrity of the game over marketing. I don't give Stern as much credit as some here do. Without Larry, Magic and Jordan, I don't think the league gets to where it is today.

Just think how many more fans this league would have if it wasn't viewed as a joke.
Back to wanting Joe fired.

I don't really like Stern but he's done an excellent job as commissioner.  Despite issues that frustrate fans like player marketing and officiating, the league is very well-positioned to thrive moving forward because of Stern and others.

Definitely time for him to step down though.  I'm guessing he'll essentially transfer control to Silver next off-season (after one last WWF-style draft appearance) and the official date is just for accounting/legal purposes.  Wouldn't seem to make sense to switch mid-season.

Wonder if any players are gonna get some last-minute shots in on him as he gets close to retiring?  There are probably some strong opinions out there.

David Stern is and will always be one of the greatest commissioners in the history of professional sports. He did more to grow his game than possibly any other professional sports commissioner ever.

That said, the game, the business of sports, and his ability to interact with and understand the people in the sport has passed him by. He should have retired years ago and him holding on for 15 months in kind of ridiculous.
