Leandro Barbosa: 'I'm here to help'

BOSTON -- Leandro Barbosa isn't scared off by the potential logjam of shooting guards on the Boston Celtics' roster and expressed a desire to simply help the team on its title quest this season.

Barbosa, officially inked to a one-year, veteran-minimum deal on Thursday, got up some shots before Sunday's exhibition finale against the Philadelphia 76ers and -- while he's still waiting on visa paperwork that will keep him off the court for tonight's game -- said he's excited about the possibilities with his new squad.

"Well, first of all, I'm very excited, and happy to be here," said Barbosa. "It's a great team, a lot of experienced guys, so I've been looking for that moment to get out there and try to help those guys."

The Celtics were looking to add depth in the backcourt to defray the second-unit ball-handling duties from Jason Terry and Courtney Lee. Like Terry and Lee, Barbosa is more of a shoot-first guard than a pure point, and that shooting guard position will crowd up in December when Avery Bradley is expected to return from double shoulder surgery. Barbosa believes his abilities will help him carve out a role.

"They're all good players," said Barbosa. "I'm here to help, and as soon as I get my chance to go on the court, I'm just going to try to do my best to succeed and help the team."

Pressed on his potential workload once Bradley returns, Barbosa added: "That will be Doc's call. I think, he's the coach, he knows what he has to do. I'm here to help. I'll be a joy for the program, I'll be happy to help."

Barbosa, a month shy of his 30th birthday, said he's still learning at this stage of his career on this team.

"It's an experienced team and I'm still young, so I'm here to learn, too," he said. "So, whatever happens, happens. I just want to help."

What exactly can he bring to the floor?

"Energy. A lot of energy," said Barbosa. "I think, like I said, I like to run, I like to bring a lot of offense. I like to score, too. But, we have a lot of scoring on the team, so we'll see. Whatever situation I'll be in, I will try to do."

Barbosa said the Los Angeles Lakers expressed interest this offseason, but didn't appear to get to the official offer stage. When Boston called looking for veteran help, Barbosa leaped at the opportunity.

"The Lakers were interested in myself, but I think Boston would be better for me," he said. "I don't know why. My agent had that talk and said it would be great for me to be here, so it's a kind of situation that I'm looking for -- especially to play with Rondo. He likes to run and I love to run, so I think it will work really well."

Added Barbosa: "It was talks. A lot of talks between [the Lakers] and my agent. I had a lot of talk with Steve [Nash], we're kind of close as friends. But nothing happened, so, it happened here."

Barbosa got a positive scouting report on Boston from rookie Fab Melo. Both are Brazil natives, and Barbosa said he could aid the younger player's development.

"I could be [a mentor to Melo]," said Barbosa. "I'm going to try to help him. We are from the same country, so I'm going to try to do my best to help him, as he's a rookie here. I'm going to help him."
- Chris Forsberg

Nice to see that Barbosa isn't shying away from the prospect of seeing less minutes than he's used to seeing during his career. I just love how everyone on our roster buys into our tenet of team basketball. Also, I really see Barbosa and Melo connecting and really fostering a mentor-mentee type of relationship. Will be very beneficial for his growth. Overall, just love the signing!

Yup, nice to see he rather be here than LA as well. His agent knows we're going deep into the playoffs and playing with Rondo if he does well is only better for him.

I really don't know why he wouldn't go to a place where he'd get more playing time.

I have always liked the attitude that Barbosa seems to project. He has looked like a team first kind of guy all the way back to the Phoenix Suns days when he was a kind of super sixth man behind Raja Bell and Steve Nash.

It concerns me just a little that he didnt mention a thing about playing defense. Maybe it's just me but I like a guy who focus's on defense first. That will really open up a running game he can enjoy.

Dude. He rejected a potential sixth man role with the Lakers to be our fifth guard. There shouldn't be any complaints.

In lieu of the injuries that have seemed to affect this team over the years, you can never have too much quality depth.

Leandro Barbosa is another quality piece for us...no agendas, and still has a lot of game left in him.

I'm sure as the season wears on, with players getting dinged up..Doc resting players, etc - Leandro will get his opportunities to shine.

I'm glad he chose us over LA.

If Barbosa gets an opportunity and plays his game with confidence, it's quite possible he will not be the C's 5th guard. Although this opinion may not be popular, I could see Barbosa taking minutes away from a healthy Bradley.  In the C's offense, Barbosa's offensive production can be comparable to Terry's.  I would really like to see Terry and Barbosa as the primary guards for the second unit. A 3 guard lineup that includes Rondo would be scary.

Exactly, or ridiculous expectations. If he accepts his role I am cool with him. TP

Of course, if the Lakers had been the franchise to make an offer (they didn't), and Boston had expressed some interest but declined to make an offer, Barbosa would be saying the exact same thing in reverse. ;)

I'm very happy with the signing.  I just think these interviews usually paint an overly rosy picture of how much a guy longed to be here.

Barbosa, like most who played with Steve, really excelled in transition with Nash. I think he can play really well with Rondo.

Actually, Barbosa chose to be here by default... he said LA took too long b/c they had to get rid of 2 players to make room for him, he didn't want to wait b/c Celts put in their offer for him and could make room faster than LA. So, LA dragging their feet is why Barbosa said he is here. First come first serve type of signing.
It takes me 3hrs to get to Miami and 1hr to get to Orlando... but I *SPIT* on their NBA teams! "Bless God and bless the (Celts)"-Lady GaGa (she said gays but she really meant Celts)

That's the idea, although I expect him to be without Rondo most of his time on the court.  He excelled the most off the bench in Phoenix as the primary ball handler.  A good deal of his success in transition comes from taking the ball coast to coast.
Philly:

Anderson Varejao    Tiago Splitter    Matt Bonner
David West    Kenyon Martin    Brad Miller
Andre Iguodala    Josh Childress    Marquis Daniels
Dwyane Wade    Leandro Barbosa
Kirk Hinrich    Toney Douglas   + the legendary Kevin McHale

because boston is that much of a contender that players are willing to come for that.
