I expect him to improve on defense this year.  Otherwise I don't anticipate much improvement but that's okay.

He is consistent and every once in a while he really makes the most of his opportunities.

I'd like to see him develop a post move or two. He's undersized as a PF, but with all the small-ball these days, he will often be defended by SFs.

I think that's feasible too, working all summer on a couple of moves is perfectly doable.

Agree that he might be able to improve his offensive efficiency. Maybe vary a little more whether he rolls off picks vs pops for the jumper. If we run more, perhaps maybe another basket or 2 in transition than last year. Defensively he can be more consistent throughout the season. Last year he was obviously new to the defense and started out rough but got better and by the end of the season looked sharper. This season, he should start out stronger at that end. But overall this is still gonna be virtually the same guy.

I want to see him finishing around the rim and drawing fouls like he did in Dallas and Orlando.  He was very underwhelming in those areas as a Celtic.  Dropped his TS% to a pedestrian 52%.

Only Rebounding is my biggest beef with Bass. He should be more animalistic. His offense game is perfect for a guard like Rondo, so needs no improv there.

Sure, he's a bit old, but last year at 26/7 (born April) Bass improved significantly on team defense.
I don't know whether or not it is possible for him to still improve, but if it is, it will happen. Bass works too hard. He picked up the team defense, he out-shot the whole team in FT% during the playoffs, and that's why he earned himself a nice fat contract from us.

He could certainly improve his rebounding if he, or pretty much anyone else on the Celtics would just box out.
Second and I'm not sure how one improves this, but his hands are not the best. I saw him mishandle quite a few entry passes and by the time he regathered he got swallowed up.
He could also grow 2-3 inches, but that probably won't happen.

Bass is more or less at his ceiling.  He might be able to add a few features to his game, like a dream shake or slightly improve his rebounding, but he's about maxed out.  He's a good shooting big, who plays underrated, but not elite defense, and is a middling rebounder.

He already has a faceup fadaway jumper and ability to drive to the rim when they get too close.  I would like to see more that along with one more post move with his back to the rim.  The aforementioned shake, or just a pump and under counter move to go with his fadaway.

I'm sure he could probably improve on some effort points of his game like rebounding and defense.  He probably could learn an offensive move or two as well.

But I don't see the Celtics looking to feature him by any means.  Not only are there a ton of other options at other position, I do expect Green, Sullinger, and even Wilcox (to an extent) to challenge him for minutes.

  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
He's in his prime.

He's not gonna learn many new tricks.

He is what he is at this point.

Our team will be pretty sick if Sully and Wilcox actually challenge Bass for minutes. Hopefully it would have more to do with those guys having great seasons than Bass regressing

Age wise he may be in his prime but that doesn't mean he really is in his prime. Last year was far and away his best year and he has just about improved his shooting every year from the floor and ft line.

How can you see those improvements (not to mention his defense ) and just dismiss the idea that he will improve?

His face up jump shooting is good, rondo's game should always give him nice easy fairly open jumpers.  His free throw shooting is remarkably good for a big.  Offensively I don't think he can or will improve in any great way.
His defense which did improve over last year is still not the best.  When Ray was healthy is was Bass who was the weak link in defense LOTS of missed assignments.  I'd hope for a moderate improvement on defense for the next few years.  He is a good athlete and as long as he puts the work into it, bass should be able to be much better on rotations.  Rebounding!  As celts55 said, no one really boxes out on the celtics so we can't pick bass out on that.  However if he would simply box out the other pf than I have no problem with his poor rebounding numbers as long as his man didn't get ball.  But when he was rebounding well in playoffs it was very noticeable how much better the team played.  Same can be said when paul was rebounding better than his average.

I don't think that he has bad hands. I think he's just not ready for the pass a lot of the time. I'd hoped that this would improve as the season went on but I don't know that it did.
