I'm younger fan from a far away country in Europe and i've been Celtics fan since my favorite player came here, KG. In time i became huge Celtics fan and there is no day without checking what's new with the team. So in last couple years i been studying Celtics history, great players, great games , titles everything. But as much as i can read on the net there isn't everything there. If someone can recommend me some sites where i can read interesting stories about Celtics past i will be thankfull.

So back to my topic subject , i was wandering who are the role guys that help Russell,Havlicek,Bird to win titles, guys who are barely talked who doesn't have their names in the Garden. One person that i can mention as a example is Leon Powe. Our best role player in 2008, maybe you will say Posey,House,Brown but i will never forget Leon Powe and his contribution for the Celtics.

Who was Leon Powe in the 80s,70s?

One of my favorite, and I feel often overlooked, Celtics was Tiny Archibald.  He only spent five seasons as a Celtic and was already nearing the wrong side of his prime when he got here, but as a kid I found him so fun to watch.  Watching him play made me want to be a point guard and a ball handler.

Tiny won one title as a Celtic in 1981, the year that I started playing and watching basketball and the year I became a Celtics fan.

Tiny was great, but I wouldn't consider him a role player -- he was a key player on the 1981 team.

Role players I loved:
Larry Seigfried
Tom (Satch) Sanders
Don Nelson (a little more than a role player)
Arte (Hambone) Williams
Gerald Henderson
Bill Walton (Walton only played 19 mpg for the 1986 champs)

I figured it was a stretch referring to Tiny as a role player, but I mentioned him because I feel like he generally gets overlooked as a key member of the '80s Celtics.  Everyone seems to remember the '84 and '86 title teams, but often forget about the early '80s teams orchestrated by Tiny.  When those early '80s teams are thought of, it's generally in terms of the beginnings of Larry Legend.

Just wanted to throw out some love for Tiny, but no, I guess you couldn't really call him a role player.

I really liked the role players on the 2002 squad that made it to the Eastern Conference Finals.  Kenny Anderson and Eric Williams, in particular, will always be two of my favorites.

  • Ashy To Classy, baby.
Being a relative yungin, I can only speak for the KG era, since I feel most players on the 90's and early 2000's teams were role players, BUT:
(i won't repeat players from year to year)
2008: LEON POWE, Kevin MCHale  ;D, TA, Posey,PJ, Perk. (also enjoyed Pollards tv show)
2009: lEON POWE, Big b-Big Baby BABY
2010: Queezy Daniels, Baby and Nate.
2011: Semih, Delonte, Shaq (i guess), D West
2012: Bradley! Steamer, Bass.

I steered away from best, and said my favorites instead. Just saying, so no one starts about how Semih was awful and not a great role player bla bla.
My pic is now, and will be Fab Melo until he posts his first official NBA dbl-dbl. This may be permanent.

I think 'role player' needs a definition.   Like Tiny, I wouldn't consider Max a role player.

did McHale win the 6th man award in 83? He was hell off the bench in his rookie year.

I would have to rate Walton as one of the better 'role' players in Celtics history. He did so much for that championship team. I also think Posey was way underrated on the 2008 championship squad. He just managed to come up big when it counted doing whatever the team needed. A lot of superstars can't even do that. It's a very difficult thing to measure or quantify and it often seems to go unnoticed.

All  of them.  I know no one agrees with me, but I consider them all, even the stars, to be role players in a TEAM sport.  And no one has done it better over the long haul than the Celtics Team.
