I would like to get the opinion of the folks here. The Walton team is the last time I can remember the ability of the Celtics to field two effective teams. Th esecond unit was fun to watch and was just as exciting as the first unit. I know we are yet to see this team, but I still think that the Walton team was much deeper. They got a championship, will this team get one for #18?

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
Than the 1986 Celtics?

Not even close, that's the best basketball team ever assembled. We don't even have a legit backup center.

Uh, the Celtics starting five back then was kinda awesome....

Danny Ainge -------- Rajon Rondo
DJ ----------------- Courtney Lee
Bird --------------- Pierce
McHale ------------- Bass
Parish ------------- KG
Walton ------------- Sully
Wedman ------------- Green
Schihting - -------- Jason Terry
          ---------- Avery Bradley
I don't know ....... I guess I will have to watch this upcoming season
The beatings will continue until morale improves

Remember how Bird and Walton would wager on who would have the best pass in a game? The second unit was referred to as the Green Team. Pure pleasure to watch.

the thing is the starting team then was really really good, weak starter was ainge
off the bench was walton, scotty wedman a very able jerry sichting

bird was playing at a level few players in the history of the nba have ever gotten to
from top to bottom this team might be deeper but the quality of players would have to be 86 team

dj<rondo
ainge>bradley
bird>pierce
mchale=kg
parish>whoever our center is, if its kg then kg wins that one but mchale wins over bass

Dude, Averys our starting shooting guard. He doesn't fit as a bench player. Lee's played the bench role before and has thrived in it.

Seconded.

This team will have lots of depth but Walton & Wedman were of much higher quality.

The deeper team is the one with the better 9th, 10th, and 11th-best players.

putting aside my green glasses, I'd have to disagree about that statement.  The '86 team steamrolled the league that year and was truly awesome to behold but it was primarily an 8-man team that year.  DJ, Ainge, Bird, Mchale, Parish, Walton, Wedman, Sichting.  Everyone else could have easily been swapped out for someone more productive.

I think this year's team has the chance to be deeper in terms of number of guys that could truly rotation quality.  They could realistically have as many as 10, possibly 11 guys that could be productive enough to part of a quality rotation.  (I'm not saying Doc will have an 11-man rotation, just that potentially 11 guys could look pretty solid on the court when they get time)

As for comparing teams, the '86 front court was far superior to anything seen since then.  I do think this year's backcourt with Rondo, Terry, Lee and Bradley will be better than the DJ, Ainge, Sichting rotation in '86.

KG does not equal an 86 McHale and it's not even close. McHale that year could well have been the league MVP if it weren't for hurting his foot and having Bird on the same team. For their respective careers I would take KG but not today's KG vs. 86 McHale-No Way.

The 86 Celtics was "THE" NBA team.  My dream team.  This team is not close IMO.  IF everybody on this team was 27 years old ..well yes it would right up there.

Period ...don't  need to discuss no LA junk .

KG over the LONG haul is more dominating than KM.

I can understand this only due to Mchale's foot injury in the 86-87 season that hampered the rest of his career.  I'd take Mchale in his prime over KG in his prime simply because Mchale only took the tougher defensive assignment in the front court, would also play center and was the most amazing post player I've ever had the privilege to have seen.  He'd foul KG right out of the game.

Yep.  While I hope I am wrong, I do not expect the late season KG of last year to be able to maintain that level of play for all of next year.
