The reality is that Rondo averaged nearly 37 mpg last season during the regular season. In the playoffs he averaged nearly 43 mpg.
Bradley only put up 21 mpg as an average, but put up nearly 33 mpg in the month of March when he was on his tear.
Jason Terry put up nearly 32 mpg last season in Dallas.
Even if you were to conservatively estimate that Rondo will paly 35 mpg and Bradley will only play 28 (and that's very low IMHO, since he's so young), that only leaves 33 mpg of backup minutes between Rondo and Bradley.
Even if we were to adjust Terry down to 28 mpg, that only leaves 5 mpg for whoever the backup is.
And considering that the C's need to create some more minutes for Green at the 3, I wouldn't be surprised to see Pierce slide down to the 2 for those leftover minutes.
The end of the story, assuming everyone's healthy, the backup 2 guard spot isn't a huge need and becomes practically nonexistent in the playoffs (the only exclusion really being foul trouble).
I like a three guard backcourt rotation too.
I like Rondo to play around 33-34 minutes. I think that level of rest allows him to play at his highest level most often (effort/focus/stamina wise) while also giving him his best preparation for the playoffs.
I'd like Bradley and Terry both up around 30 minutes. So that will give you roughly 93-94 minutes a game for those three backcourt players.
I think squeezing a fourth guy in there (for 10-15mpg or even 20+mpg) has a strong likelihood of hurting Terry's + Bradley's performance (due to the decrease in minutes) and consequently the backcourt's impact overall.
Exactly.
And while I'd like a Delfino, Lee, or at least a Pietrus for the sake of depth, the reality is that when this team is healthy, between the the three guard rotation of Rondo/Bradley/Terry and the fact that there aren't enough minutes for Pierce and Green at the 3, we don't really need anyone else.
We're probably better off dedicating our search for an extra big who can at least play some 5 given the uncertainty of our youth (Sullinger and JJJ) and the health situations of the vets (KG and Wilcox).
