I think Green will have a phenominal season. The guy is young, athletic, and runs like a deer. On top of that, he can play lights out defense. He was never able to get fully comfortable in Boston, but I think this season will be different.

Giving  9 millons each year for 4 years contract is a big stupidity. :o :o :o

"We wren't under the cap anyway," that applies to the next few years as well.
True, but what if Ainge makes some trades? Or if something horrid happens and we have to amnesty Pierce? Granted, the chance of JG's contract making a difference here is probably pretty minimal, but a risk is a risk. That's why I hope that year #4 is a team option, at least.

Also Ainge didn't have to let him be a UFA.

He could have held up the deal and made him an RFA this year, then offered the $9m QO. That might mean Green takes the QO and bolts in a year, but you'd have his Bird Rights.

I think the reality is for better or worse, Danny is in love with Jeff Green - must be a scouting thing, because the stats suggest he's not this good, and I think the market for Green was lower than $36m / 4 years.

That being said, if 4th year is team option, then I'm fine with the deal. There is some value to having a few role players making more than the minimum, as it creates more trade options. And there won't be cap space net three years anyways. Although if they run into the Apron because of it, its a problem.

I always understood the 7.5% raises every year, but can someone explain the Lin deal in Houston where that 3rd year was a huge hike so that it hurt NY if they were to match?

Gilbert Arenas rule. The salary can spike from 5 to 12 in that third year on a restricted free agent provided you have enough cap space for the overall average of the deal.
