To put it plainly, while Bass is the better and younger player, Camby is a better fit based on what he can bring to the game. Camby is flat out better at defense and rebounding.

In terms of defense, it's not so clear cut:

Camby:  0.89 points allowed per possession (301st in NBA); 42.3% FG% allowed; 0.86 points allowed per possession on post-ups (159th)

Bass:  0.69 points allowed per possession (16th in NBA); 31.3% FG% allowed; 0.56 points allowed per possession on post-ups (7th)

In other words, in terms of actual play on the court, Bass was MUCH better on defense than Camby.  In fact, Bass was one of the most effective defenders in the NBA playing in our system.

Camby didn't have a elite defender like KG to help him out though. How good would Bass look if he was the anchor of the defense and didn't play in a system like the C's have?

Respectfully, who cares what Bass would look like on another team?  All I care about it what he can do for us.  Bass is a much better offensive player, and in our system, he played at an elite level defensively.  What are the chances that Camby could come close to that on either end?

I don't know that it's as simple as that. Ray and Bradley have pretty similar numbers on synergy but the team's defensive numbers were much better with Avery than Ray.

Intuitively, Bass just doesn't seem that good defensively.  Is it possible that playing next to KG is a significant factor that bleeds through into Bass's stat there?
Yes.

Specifically Ray's numbers were in a couple of as good as or better than LBJs. (if IIRC everywhere except post defense)

Synergy doesn't capture getting beat and forcing others to help is my guess. But I'd need a broader study of the issue before I'd say for sure.

They claim that they do.

Quote
Defense - Plays

How we select the player - Synergy tracks the initial on ball defender for many playtypes. For example, an offensive player is in Isolation and blows by his defender (player A) and gets to the rim. A help defender (player B) rotates over to try and contest the shot. We attribute the defensive play to Player A, as he was the person was initially beaten on the play.

What happened to the other play types? - We do not attach an individual defender on offensive rebounds, cuts or transition plays as these are team defense concepts and fault/credit usually cannot be attributed to one person.

Synergy isn't perfect, but when one guy ranks in the top 20 defensively, and another guy is around 300th, I think the stats are telling us something.

They also don't track things like hiding bad defenders by having them guard the weaker offensive opponents when possible.

Seems to me Bass would greatly benefit from the example from Synergy you give, Roy.

I'd have to wonder, how many more point Bass would have been attributed with "allowing" had KG not been there to cover for his mistakes?

can't see the hawks or knicks they have no cap room or noteable trade exceptions.

Mavs could work if S&T for terry, but it sounds like they wanna save there ammono for paul and howard, i think that's stupid cos the clock is running out for dirk

As for the heat they have no cap space and even ainge will not trade bass to them.

As for the nets there targeting ilyasova, and they can alos resign humphries if they want to.

That leaves the Pacers who might wanna split the hibbert money between bass and kaman. Even then AInge should be able to land a trade exception, as they are so far below the cap.

Think ainge has given bass an idea of what he prepared to pay which would be slighly more than the MLE, if bass can get more ainge will work out a sign and trade deal and try to land someone via a trade or free agency.

I just don't see anyone offering bass crazy money, maybe 4 years 30 million being the max.

If only Minnesota would be willing to do a sign and trade for Bass..Beasley could perhaps realize his seemingly limitless potential here.

If Atlanta is serious about Bass, I would like the idea of Bass for Zaza Pachulia. Overall just a good solid center.

I think him and Jeff green are somewhat redundant. I'm a fan of Beasley in green but I just don't see it fitting

He wouldn't, I would say his rebounding ability if more important than Bass' scoring though.
Yes, YES. This team has struggled to rebound the ball for several seasons in a row.  Give me Camby over Bass.

Bass for Terry?

Best case scenario for us if he leaves
