I don't think S&T'ng Bass for another PF would make sense. We are already loaded in that position. Unless that PF is named Josh Smith, I'd say no. Trading Bass for a guard would make more sense.

Thanks for the breakdown, cfan38.

It looks like if Camby is willing to go for the mini, we will probably be his second choice. After all, he has a decent shot at starting for the returning champions. It's that center position that's really up in the air looking forward

Trading for a PF doesn't make sense if JJJ and Sully are going to get minutes this year. I'm not sure they should be counted on this year. The reason I say sign and trade for a PF is just because that is where the value likely is. Danny isn't likely to give Bass a long term deal and we will need to make some value for him.

using the 26 Million total that was previously reported. The Cs are currently left with around 14 mill. If Ray excepts the 6mill offer and Green excepts his qualifying offer 7.2 that takes care of any free space.

I believe we are then left with the mini mid-level exemption 3mill? and resigning bird right players and possibly sign and trading them.

I think that if we re-sign Green and Ray, we will have the normal MLE - $5 million. This is because we will still be below the luxury tax "apron."

Also, my understanding is that there is no "qualifying offer" for Green. He is an unrestricted free agent. We do retain his Bird rights.

We do have a qualifying offer out to Stiemsma - not sure whether that is included in your figures above.

The bottom line is that if we re-sign Green and Ray, we will probably have no money left under the cap, but we can still pursue a free agent at the full MLE.

I'm not sure about the Bass situation, but we may need to renounce him in order to use the full MLE. I think if we sign him, given the other numbers involved, then we would get kicked down to the mini MLE.

Personally, I'd rather try to get camby at the full MLE. It's a long shot, of course.

Then, sign a cheap backcourt guy.

Rondo/TBD/Moore
Allen/Bradley/TBD
Pierce/Green
KG/Sullinger/JJJ
Camby/Stiemsma/Melo

Or, with Bass and the mini, which would probably be for a backcourt guy and then with Wilcox on a vet min contract,

Rondo/TBD/Moore
Allen/Bradley/TBD
Pierce/Green
Bass/Wilcox/Sullinger/JJJ
KG/Stiemsma/Melo

If we resign Stiemer to the QO and get Wilcox on a vet min, that will add two more "centers" to our roster.

Doc is on record saying KG will play the 5 next year (he actually said 4 or 5 it doesn' matter, they are just numbers.)  We will then have 5 players capable of playing the Center spot, possibly 6 if you include Sullinger.

I see our rotation shaping up this way:

PG - Rondo/Bradley/Moore/Dooling

SG - Ray/Bradley/Pietrus/Dooling

SF - Pierce/Green/Pietrus

PF - KG/Sullinger/JJJ/Green

C  - KG/Stiemer/Wilcox/Melo

This is our roster without using the full MLE on our 15th player, signing Stiemer to the QO, signing Wilcox, Pietrus, Dooling to vet mins.

This is probably how we wind up, unless we actually do get Jason Terry then Dooling is gone. That would use up the MLE, and we'd have only vet mins to work with.  I would prefer bringing Dooling back and using the MLE on a Camby-type who can start and finish at the 5 for us.

With the following moves prosumably complete by July 11th

KG      3 yrs 34 mill
Terry   3 yrs 15mill (5mill exeption)
J Green ???? im assuming at least 7 mill per year

and

Stiemsma 1yr 1.2mill qualifying offer*
Ray      2yr 6mill (not sure he excepts)*

the 2012-2013 Celtics currently look as follows

PG Rondo
SG AB, Ray*,Terry, Moore
SF Pierce, J Green, Joseph
PF Sullinger, JJJ, S Williams
C  KG, Steimsma*, Melo

With the original 26 million free space and the 5mill exception for not going over that 26 mill the Cs cap room is is filled. That is if Steimsma takes the qualifying offer and ray comes back for the 6mill offer.

I will be surprised if Moore, Joseph and Williams all make the team. My guess is that either Williams or Joseph will be the odd man out, leaving the Cs with two roster spots. This is where Danny can really have to earn his keep by plugging in usable vets at the minimum into the last two spots. I expect him to try first to get Pietrus and Wilcox to come back cheap. Other options may be Rashard Lewis, Brendon Haywood (if amnestied) or E Brand (if amnestied)

If cheap vets cant be found then this leaves the Cs with a strange roster. Alot will be riding on the shoulders of Green and Sulligner. They will both have to produce this season at the PF spot.

If Ray declines then I would expect Bass to be sign and traded or brought back for the 6 mill offered to Ray.

Assuming Rays back the likely rotation. (after AB is back from injury)

PG Rondo 38 min, Terry 10 min
SG AB 25 min , Ray 10 min, Terry 13min
SF PP 28 min, Green 8min, Ray 12 min
PF Green 28 min, Sullinger 15 min, JJJ 5min
C  KG 29 min, Steimsma 15min, Sullinger 4min

this will once again be a poor rebounding team (though I think Sully will surprise some). However this team will excel in offensive execution and knocking down jump shots. The added depth compared to last season should make for a tough playoff team(especially if a usable vet big can be added cheap).
