The Dallas Mavericks might use the NBA’s one-time amnesty clause before free agency opens Sunday.

General manager Donnie Nelson wouldn’t say if center Brendan Haywood would be the target, as some media outlets have reported.

Haywood is owed $8.35 million next season, $9.07 million during the 2013-14 season and $9.79 million for 2014-15. The Mavs also own a team option to pay Haywood $10.52 million for 2015-16.

That’s a huge contract the Mavericks could remove from their books via the amnesty clause for a player who averaged only 5.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per game this past season. It also could help them clear more salary cap space.

I would think the c's would have some interest if Haywood can be had for about 3 or 4 mil. I wouldn't mind Camby either, but Haywood is bulkier and younger with no major injuries as far as I know.

I think this could be one of the best uses of cap space if the C's end up having it.  Make bids on guys like Haywood to see if you can get them for a bargain.

Yeah getting him on a two year small deal would be nice, assuming that the amnesty bidding doesn't force you to assume an option year.

agreed.  a 2-year deal at most for 3 mill or less would be worth it if we have no better options on the table for Center.

The way amnesty bidding works is that you bid the dollar amount and then assume the duration of the contract at that amount.

On the open market he could end up commanding a larger payday than in the bidding.

  • Boston Celtics= Championships, nothing less.
Rondohondo you keep this site running yourself man!
Always have links and stories it's great. Really appreciate it.TP.

As far as Haywood goes, he'd be a nice back up big body to come in and get 5 fouls. Would probably get some easy buckets with Rondo out there too. Yeah about 5 million max for me.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Hmm..i thought for sure Odom would be the amnesty target for the Mavs.

With that said, either would be a great addition to this Celtics team.

Odom is only guaranteed a couple million.  It wouldn't make sense to amnesty him.

Odom can be waived for only a small part of his contract's raw dollar amount.

Have to wait and see what happens with that proposed Odom/Mo Williams trade.

Dallas also cleared a little more cap space by trading Azubuike and by sliding down in the draft from #17 to #24.

If Dallas is still intent on finding a way to land Deron Williams in free agency, then the writing is on the wall for Haywood.

Edit: wow, Haywood's contract is pretty hefty. Three more fully guaranteed years remain, at an average of $9 mil a year. The Celtics would be on the hook for the full amount if they submitted a claim?

No they'd be on the hook for however many years he has remaining at the bid they put in.

So if they bid 3 million and won they'd have him for 3 years for 3 million 9 million total.

Oh, wow. That's completely different. I'd totally be on board with picking up Haywood at up to 50% of that contract's value, at $4 or $5 million bid per year for three years.

I assume it's only three years, because the contract's fourth/last year is fully unguaranteed if waived before August 2015. Perhaps amnesty doesn't wipe out that last year, though.

Is Haywood any better at this point than what we already have?

Now, the Celtics would need to clear a bunch of cap room by renouncing free agents in order to make a bid, correct? The timing on this could be difficult.

Could a team with existing cap space (say Sacramento) submit a successful claim on Haywood and then trade him to another team later on?
