I think Kane's modification where Rondo + Pierce + draft picks go to Orlando for Howard and Turkoglu, with Pierce then traded on or retiring, is the best option. (The C's could then sign Green to pair with Howard and Deron Williams.)

What could the Nets do to match that offer? Rondo is a top-flight young point guard on a reasonable contract (and a much better player than Lopez). Pierce, by retiring, provides salary cap relief from Turkoglu's contract or, if he doesn't retire, serves as a valuable trade chip for Orlando.

The Lakers could still offer Bynum, but who could they include to take back Turkoglu's contract? They've already balked at trading Bynum and Gasol for Howard. Not much else on their roster that I can see to appeal to Orlando.

If it was as simple as "competing" with the Nets, I agree we'd have the better offer.  But if it was as simple as "competing" with the Nets, Dwight would have been a Laker this season.  He refused to be traded there.  He doesn't appear to have any interest in playing in Boston either.  But he DOES want to desperately play in Brooklyn.  That's where they have the edge.

From Sketch5:

Why don't we just wait a year to get Howard?

If we go for a title this year it will be with the core of Peirce, KG and Rondo and hopefuly Allen.

But if you just want some thing for the future, why not wait and develop the Rooks this year, get Green comfortable with the 3 spot again.

Then you know  Josh Smith is most likely (if he has it his way) coming to town. That would make Howard turn his head north. Play with a star PF and PG, and maybe an emerging SG and SF. This would be a killer team of Defense and Offense. I mean Green would be your possibly your weakest defender...Not to bad I'd say.

Rondo/Moore
Bradley/Mayo
Green/Pick up
Smith/Bass/JJJ
Howard/???

100% ++ agree with this rational.

1. Rondo, Bradley, Green, JJJ, Steamer, Moore

2. Add two "quality" youngs this year or trade up and get one you think is a "semi-impact" player.

3. Let Smith get to Free agency - Rondo will make sure he gets to Boston and Smith has said he'd love to be in Boston.

4. Grow this young talent, pull in Howard via Rondo and Smith.

5. Add a couple of Vets...  rings

This is a very good play, the issue is will Howard stick to not signing a contract or would he sign with the first contender that trades for him? If you feel that he won't make it to free agency you need to make a deal for him in the off season...if you want him that is.

I say wait on him. Can't really trade for him. I don't think D Will will come here, so if you trade first, then you loose Rondo, and Green. Have Howard on a very bad team only to loose him next year.

If some how you do get D Will, that will pretty much be the team.

D Will/Dooling
Bradley/Moore
?/?
Kg/Wilcox
Howard/Steamer

D Will will shoot a lot, and if things go bad he'll go away.

If you wait and get J smooth right off the bat before Howard makes up his mind.

Rondo/Moore
Bradley/?
Green/?
Smith/Bass
Howard/Steamer

Thats a fast breaking defensive team, that can still play half court ball.

Agreed. Everyone has seen what happened to Cleveland and Toronto - especially Toronto. Cleveland got real lucky with that Clipper's pick. Everyone also saw how NO got assets and that is what Orlando will do. They will get assets.

Howard is a pipe dream.  We don't have the assets to trade for him (even including rondo and pp), he doesn't really want to come to Bos, and he will never be a free agent.

So let it go people.

Never said it would happen. People were putting out scenario's of how to get Howard, and I just put my take on it.

My version was one that wouldn't get rid of the entire team and still get Howard here because he wants to play with an other star. Getting Smith and Keeping Rondo does that.

Oh and to say Never is pretty absolute. With Howard and how he flip flops theres a small percent of a chance that he may make it to free agency. I think Snookie has a better chance of becoming President of the United States, but there is still a chance...

If you've got rondo/avery/jeff green/smith/howard, who is gonna get you a jump shot at the end of the game with tight D?

One of the worst shooting lineups out there...

how much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck was chris bosh?

EXACTLY.   If the Rondo we just saw in the post season is the Rondo we will see going forward, Williams isn't worth a dollar more IMO.  He isn't worth $10 million more even if Rondo reverts to regular season form.
