So I dug up this interview from a couple months ago in which Garnett sits down with WEEI for about 20 minutes. It's a great interview and definitely a good listen, could listen to Kevin talk forever just has something about him.

In the interview he highlights a few things:

He hates, hates, hates playing the five (we all knew this) he does not like the banging that's required from the five position and states that it is much harder on your body. That being said he states more than once that he would "run through a wall for Doc"

He is very flip-floppy on the retirement issue, in one segment I'm thinking "there's no way this guy retires" then a minute later he talks like he might.

He gives very high praise for Austin Rivers. I don't think he's saying it just because he's Doc's son, Kevin generally sounds very impressed and even mentions Austin being one of the "greatest to play this game" and if he joined the Celtics it would be one of the "dopest things ever"

IMO the decision to draft Austin Rivers
was already made last year, when Doc signed
his 5-yr extension.

Highly doubtful it happens, though...

He's not going to be available when the Celtics pick - will be long gone by then.

And, is he REALLY worth trading up to get?  Can you imagine the pressure he'd be under?  What happens if it doesn't pan out?  What if he takes so much fan abuse that the only option is to move him?  I just don't see this happening...

If you want Rivers you likely have to give up both draft picks (or at least one )and Bradley.  I wouldn't do it.

I completely agree ,,, considering Doc was ready to retire in order to "watch (his) kids play sports", and then suddenly signed a five-year contract, I'm pretty confident that was going to be something they put as many resources into as possible.

It's a crap-shoot, obviously, but a pretty good roll of the dice with the position they sit in now. No guarantees, but it's a chance he couldn't pass up, and Danny would love to have Austin here.

  • We may as well put Tyrion in at center.
Besides, didn't Austin's stock decrease throughout the season?

Ainge loves undervalued players with immense potential despite a couple glaring defects to their game - (e.g. Rondo, Bradley, Perk). He loves to take gambles when it comes to drafting, which is why Rivers would be on his drafting list.

Did the Cs ever work out with Rivers?
I like Marcus Smart

Haha, I think he's the one and only player that the C's probably don't need to work out.  He's been working out for Doc for the last 19 years.

I'm really not sure if they worked him out or not..depending on who's there when we draft I wouldn't mind packaging the picks and moving up to get him. A team as offensively challenged as Boston could certainly use an offensive stud. Like I said, a lot depends on who is available, I mean would you rather have Jeff Taylor and Fab Melo or Austin Rivers? I'll take Rivers

C's can move up if necessary without trading Bradley
where in the world did you get that idea

pick 21 and 22 will get you up to around 16 at best, Rivers already has a guarantee in the lottery(New Orleans likes him at 10) . Now if you could find a way to get that 10th pick from New Orleans then you might have a chance to grab Rivers. There was a rumor that the Hornets would trade the 10th pick if a team takes back Ariza or Okafor,so I guess there is a chance there, but I still think they will want something back .

If he can be anything remotely resembling a less fragile Steph Curry, that'd be nice.

I don't know if we do have the assets to get him, but I wouldn't underestimate having consecutive picks. I bet GMs love that.

Why on earth wouldn't you trade #21 for the 10th and Okafor. I'd do that trade in a hear beat. Okafor is a good defensive, rebounding big man and he only has this year and next on his contract. That means he plays with KG and Paul this year and he's very tradable as an expiring next year or comes off at the end of the season. - not a big deal. Meanwhile, we get the 10th pick? Done...

Okafor / Aaron Gray
KG / Bass
Pierce / Green
Bradley / Pietrus
Rondo / player

My main concern with Okafor is that he was injured for most of last season, and the Cs have had way too many injury issues the last four seasons, and even being young hasn't seemed to hold the injury bug at bay (see: Bradley, Avery, and Green, Jeff).

Still, Okafor is a solid center—a good rebounder and defender who's also decent on offense, and picking at No. 10 would greatly increase the chances of the Cs getting an impact youngster. If it's Rivers, that's cool—he knows how to score, and we all know Boston is in desperate need of a scorer. Boston also needs rebounding help, which Okafor would provide. Plus, his contract is up in two seasons, so he, Pierce and a re-signed KG could all go off the books at the same time. This year's free-agent class is a dud, and next year's could end up being the same. Start Okafor and KG, have Bass, a re-signed Wilcox and a re-signed Stiemsma on the bench, and suddenly you have a pretty good, and pretty deep, frontcourt. Have Green backing up Pierce, and a backcourt rotation of Rondo, Bradley and Rivers, and you've got a good mix of youth and experience, and plenty of guys who can run with Rondo in his prime, and still an overall good defensive team.

Of course, I don't know if my scenario fits financially, and I'm not saying Boston SHOULD do this ... just an idea.

PG: Rondo/Moore
SG: Bradley/Rivers
SF: Pierce/Green
PF: KG/Bass/JJJ
C:  Okafor/Wilcox/Stiemsma

How much cap space do they have left if they take on Okafor and the #10 pick?
