I think either could have helped.  Green could have helped with some of our scoring droughts, while Perk would have helped with rebounding and inferior defense.

I would prefer Perk, as much for chemistry as anything else.  At the same time, Danny was never going to pay him.  Still, I would have preferred a trade exception this season, with which we most likely could have signed David West, who would have solved both the scoring issue *and* the rebounding problems.

The lockout(no chance at Krstic), the CP3 trade (worse draft pick), and Green's heart ailment destroyed or devalued all we got back for him.

I don't think it still haunts the C's but the value we tried to get degraded rapidly through circumstances.

The fact that there is still so much controversy over it would imply that the trade was a poor one, up to this point at least :-\
Offense sells tickets, Defense wins games, Rebounds win championships.

Have the opposite view. Seems like there's a handful of people who always bring it up. Even though the absolute worst things that could have happened ended up happening-- Shaq stays hurt, Krstic leaves, Green heart issue--- seems like a big majority of the board reached the conclusion that he wouldn't have been the difference last year or this year.

The only thing that has been HAUNTING the Celtics are INJURIES.

SHAQ,JO, Wilcox, AB, Jeff Green, Ray Allen, Rondo...the list goes on and on and on and frankly, Perk trade or not, we could have contended the last 2 years with any lineup that we field had it not for injuries. :'(

Let's see what we get for the pick, and what Jeff Green gives us next year before we make a final verdict.

The good thing about the trade?  It may help OKC deny Miami a ring.

  • You say when......
Perk was a litle odd, immature, and needed a BIG MAN camp to stop bringing the ball down low to play smaller, stop getting a tech after the ref calls the foul on the guy covering him....but he had good D, and good to better O...and now we see how hard he is to replace...and how we paid by having kg to move to center.....with no real big man back up...!

Perk trade still haunting the Celtics?

In what way?

Perk was injured at the time of the trade and Danny had decided that there was no chance to re-sign him.  We got two...at the time...healthy players and a first rounder?

How exactly are the Celtics haunted by the trade?  They could have waited until the end of the season...Hoped that Perk would be healthy...Maybe gotten another round in the playoffs...(Probably not)  And gotten exactly what the Cavaliers got for the messiah.

The good thing about the trade?  It may help OKC deny Miami a ring.

Exactly

And likely a healthy Jeff Green...Who will complement Rondo greatly with a training camp....And a first rounder in a deep draft....Which could either be used to trade up or for a vet.

He actually didn't help, at least in the first game.  He had a +/- of minus 2 in the 25 minutes he was on the court.  That is not easy to do when your team wins by 11.

Nick Collison was plus 13 in his 21 minutes.  Yeah, I know, it is all match ups, yeah right.  13 points is a pretty big on court off court swing for an $8M indispensible player.

I like Perk and all he stands for but he is way overrated and now way over paid.

If KG and PP return... with the possibility of TWO NICE draft picks ,  J GREEN , WILCOX and BASS on board.  Add super Rondo and a healthy more mature confident Bradley to this group and we are looking OK .  ;D

And if DA can land us a couple nice centers. We'll be good to go...... Please get us a YOUNG healthy atheltic CENTER.....not another JO  ::)

I'm very excited about the possiblities DA has , given all his assets .... we may come out smelling rosey.

The thing is that people seem to forget was that Perk turned down a contract that they offered. They did a max of what they could do(remember Garnett was going to take up 21 mil the next season) with returning players and not knowing what the lock out was going to do to cap space, and also the CP3 things was hoping to go to go down too.

So in that respect it was a good move on DA's part. Its crap luck that last year Shaq couldn't come back, that would have made a big difference. And that Green had health issues.

I think if Green comes back health for a full season this year, this should get rediscussed. Could pay off in the long run instead of the short term on this one.

I think a lot of the perceived loss of Perk fall out has really been just poor depth at the 4/5.  We actually did OK this year given all of our injuries (given that we found Steamer and Hollins).

I mean can you argue that we lost in 2010 because Perk was out?  Yeah.  But could you also argue that if Danny actually had gotten a playable 5th big man (especially given that KG was coming off surgery, Rasheed was old, and BBD was undersized and out of shape) that we could've overcome the injury.  It was really that the Celtics ran out of steam (and fouls) in the closing minutes of the game at the 4/5 spot.  I think even having a Hollins or a Steamer (rather than a Sheldon Williams) might've translated to a Finals win.

And it wasn't like we missed Perk last.  We were dominant without him the first half of the season.  It was that we lost Shaq, JO never fully recovered from his injuries, and we were stuck with Krstic, BBD, and KG as our only legit bigs.

This isn't a shot at Perk.  I loved him when he was here and I still root for him.  However, I think the Celtics inability to even find passable 5th and 6th bigs has really been their problem up until this season, where they actually did a nice job picking up people like Steamer, Hollins, and even Williams.

I remember last year, the Celtics were 3-0 in the regular season vs Miami. After the Perk trade, the Celtics were 1-5 vs Miami including a regular season game and the 2nd round of the playoffs.

The original post needs some major corrections.  Perk was hurt/inactive for more than half the season.  So it's more like the C's were 3-0 against MIA with SHAQ.  And likely around 1-5 with an injured or missing SHAQ.

Perk is a below average center; he has gotten zero press in OKC for making them a winning team.  And rightfully so as it's KD, Westbrook, Harden, Ibaka, Thabo that are their best players.
