Let's just break this down to a situation that us non-millionaires can all relate to.

Paul Pierce goes to work at 7pm on Wednesday night.  He's playing poker at 9:30pm the night before. 20+ hours before he has to go to work.

This is like the equivalent of a normal person having to go to work or school at 8am on Monday for a major presentation or test, and choosing to play video games at 10am on Sunday.

Does that really sound like a big deal?  Especially if you've been preparing all week or year for this presentation/test?  Pierce has essentially been preparing over 30 years for this, and all of the last 5-6 months for this season in particular, and all of last week for Philly specifically.  If he chooses to relax a little bit the day before the game, that's really quite all right.  Actually, don't most "experts" even suggest that it's best to relax the day before an important test instead of staying up all night cramming?  Sounds like what Pierce is doing to me.

After 18 months with their Bigs, the Littles were: 46% less likely to use illegal drugs, 27% less likely to use alcohol, 52% less likely to skip school, 37% less likely to skip a class

  • You ain't the boss of the freakin' bedclothes.
If he was playing madden would you care?

Because I'm starting to think that's how these guys think about poker. For joe everyguy, if you're in a casino playing poker, the stakes might be a little higher. For pierce, he's there to have fun, and likely doesn't care too much whether he wins or loses.

If it relaxes him and he has the money "to burn" more power to him, the House always wins ,  HAA!!! what a simple concept , but everybody goes in thinking the odds are on their side... ;D

Wish I had that kind of extra cash to burn... no problem with him having a little fun ...thats why he's earning it, it's his money.

Wonder what odds he'd give the Celtics on winning game 3 ?

Poker (and blackjack if you're ridiculously good) are the only normal casino games where you can consistently win.

Poker is because you're competing directly with other players, so the house still always wins anyway.  But if PP is good enough, the odds really are on his side.

My friend just texted me.  He's a professional rock climber.  Avery Bradley is scaling a rock wall with his injured arm.  Should Avery be doing that the night before a big game?

Seriously, as long as Pierce doesn't put in a 20 hour poker session and let his knee stiffen up, what's the big deal.

My friend just texted me.  He is a professional city pedesterian.  He saw Kevin Garnett in downtown Philly cussing out a traffic cop for telling him to not cross a street.  I think KG might be mentally checked out of this series.

The house always wins in poker because they get paid regardless, but you aren't playing against the house in poker. you are playing against other people. So statistics is not enough to forecast expected winnings. It can be a winning game.

I would expect that for someone like Pierce, poker is a bad idea. Pierce seems to have an exaggerated sense of confidence which helps him as a scorer. Not sure how that helps you win in poker.

Consider Pierce's mentality as a scorer. He has stated that you could be 0-20 as a scorer, but then if you hit one you feel like you are hot. Scary logic for a poker player.

Hopefully he wasn't in a smoke filled room until excessively late (since most humans have sleep patterns that are to some degree in sync with the sun) and hopefully he isn't doing anything against medical advice for the knee. I'm pretty sure he didn't have to make any hard cuts at the casino.

told you relaxation was good for Paul.  All he needed was some pain killers and poker chips ...he is a new man.

I don't think NBA players fall under the category of most humans when it comes to sleep patterns. They work the night shift.

Never doubt the Captain. Paul knows what he's doing.  He lives for this stuff.  He wants to win as much as anyone.
