eh, he is a brad miller type player.

Just curious, why is this a bad thing?  Miller was one of the better centers in the league in his prime.  Not a superstar, but a decently above average starter.

And I think Hawes is a significantly better defender than Miller was.

He's pricing himself with these playoffs.

Someone's going to overpay him and I don't think it'll be the Celtics.

Seems like there's a guy or two in every playoffs who places their way into a rich deal that ends up being an albatross down the road.

Totally agree, it happens when a player catches fire during the playoffs and team's overreact thinking he can replicate that fluke effort over an entire season.

A couple glaring examples ---

Jerome James turned one decent playoff series for the Sonics into a huge contract thanks to Isiah.

Troy Hudson had an incredible 2003 playoff series against the Lakers, got a huge contract and basically disappeared afterwards.

Seriously... Are we going to jump on THIS bandwagon too? Every time a player has a good game, someone wants him in green.. Cut it out..
When you lose, the easy part is to see who gives up. Giving up is very simple. You basically take your stuff and walk away. To continue to work and to continue to compete is one of the most difficult things, especially when you really don't have anything - KG

To be fair, Hawes has been a target all year, and was much more impressive when he was healthy to start the year than he is right now.

Maybe, but there are better big men out there for us to keep an eye on.

I would take Hawes over any of the other young free agent centers this summer.

I think Hibbert is peaking, and is soft and getting softer (while Hawes is getting better, and getting tougher).  So, when you pay for Hibbert, you are going to overpay for future production, when his production will actually decrease.  Hawes will continue to get better, if he can stay healthy.

Hawes is a better all around player than Lopez (although I do like Lopez), and Lopez is restricted.

McGee is an idiot, who may never learn how to be a consistently good NBA player.

Hawes is on the upswing.  He is just starting to grow into his body, and he has the size, athleticism, and skills to be a top 5 center.

edit: with all that said.  I don't really want the C's to go after any of them.  They are all more likely or not going to be overpaid, and not going to be good enough to get their teams over the hump.  I would rather save the money for a real star, or use it in trades.

If you'd like, I invite you to go through my post history - this isn't the first time I've mentioned wanting to target Spencer Hawes in FA (along with Michael Beasley) this season. And it won't be the last.

With such little talent hitting unrestricted free agency this offseason, and based on the needs of this team - its a logical thought process.
2021 Houston Rockets
PG: Kyrie Irving/Patty Mills/Jalen Brunson
SG: OG Anunoby/Norman Powell/Matisse Thybulle
SF: Gordon Hayward/Demar Derozan
PF: Giannis Antetokounmpo/Robert Covington
C: Kristaps Porzingis/Bobby Portis/James Wiseman

I'm with the guys who want Ilyasova.

I haven't seen enough of Hawes this year to comment.

Ilyasova's young, plays with energy, rebounds, and can shoot with range.

I like KG at center and see him returning next year so I doubt Hawes would be here.

Ilyasova is interesting. He's young. He's a rebounder. He's an outside shooter. And he's long and a good defender.

Now I don't know how the C's could do it but if there's a way to upgrade Bass to Ilyasova and still keep most of the rest of the team intact, I would do that.

Double sign and trade and throw in JaJuan Johnson and someone else to make up the salary difference.

Hawes is a good target. He is young and has good upside to push for.
His skillset is a reminiscent of Vlade Divac. He is an excellent passer and is also a reliable defender.
I'd definitely take him over someone like McGee (brain missing) or Hibbert (stationary).
And for some odd feeling, I still can't see KG returning to Celtics to play at center position. I think he'd love to get back to his own position, at which he's more comfortable, especially in one-on-on defense.

The only thing about Ilyasova that concerns me is his drive/desire. From afar, it seems like he's indifferent at times.

Perhaps that's an unfair assessment, but, as a former fantasy owner, I've seen a good number of box scores from games where he's been a complete non-factor.

I fall more into this realm of thinking. Too many nights he seems disinterested. It's really been this past seasons second half where we've seen some production on a consistent basis.

I don't believe it's his drive or desire that's an issue, it was playing time and support from the coaching staff. He never got consistent minutes until Bogut went down, and since then he's been extremely productive. Skiles is a terrible coach imo.

I guess this is a fair assesment. I've also heard mixed messages on Skiles coaching/motivational tactics.

But from a purely outside perspective i guess i just haven't seen enough to judge if Illyasovas disappearing acts are his own doing or as you contend just horribly bad coaching from Skiles.
