Cuban was asked whether, at any point of the regular season or playoffs, he had second thoughts about not offering a multiyear contract to center Tyson Chandler, a pivotal member of last year’s title team. “Hell no,” Cuban said. “Nope. Not even a millisecond. Because those who are talking otherwise haven’t read the CBA and are just talking out their [expletive] without any foundation. But that’s what you guys do.”

I don't get it. What in the last CBA would have prevented Cuban from resigning Chandler?

Sounds like the reporter hit a nerve.  I don't know the details but from where I sit not re-signing Chandler was a huge mistake.
"If somebody would have told you when he was playing with the Knicks that Nate Robinson was going to change a big time game and he was going to do it mostly because of his defense, somebody would have got slapped."  Mark Jackson

I don't think he's saying that anything strictly barred it.  My guess is that he's referencing some of the fairly crippling luxury tax penalties for multiple-time offenders, as well as the importance of flexibility going forward.

  • I'm a Paul Heyman guy.
Didn't he say during the last offseason that signing Chandler was a priority? So he did not offer a contract to Tyson?

One can generally presume an angry, profane response actually means its unadmitted opposite.

The guy is just frustrated 'cause he made a collosal mistake.
When you lose, the easy part is to see who gives up. Giving up is very simple. You basically take your stuff and walk away. To continue to work and to continue to compete is one of the most difficult things, especially when you really don't have anything - KG

But didn't he use close to the same money in absorbing Odom's contract?

Cuban may have been suffering coveting some LA glamour rather than looking at what his team needed. Clearly you don't need Marion and Odom.

It's what Roy said, but I also think the salary cap is dropping precipitiously after next season - remember the 50/50 split doesn't kick in til year 3 of the CBA.

Signing a guy under a 57% cap and carrying the same deal into a 50% cap makes a big difference, especially with how it impacts the new, more punitive luxury tax.

Yup...no matter how you shake it out, he threw one of there few remianing prime years of Dirk down the drain to win another championship. He should have keep Chandler and Barea .  He was greedy,  planning on snaging Dwill & DH12 for the big SCORE .

Backfired !!    Hee h eee hee ;)
