Former Hornets owner George Shinn was forced to sell the franchise to the NBA due to financial troubles in December of 2010. The Hornets are the league’s first league-owned team.

Benson has owned the Saints since 1985.

actually, I think there was a SI article talking about what a good position they were in going forward

Its interesting to see that the Celtics were sold nearly 10 years ago for roughly $360 million and, a decade later, one of the more downtrodden teams in the league gets sold for nearly that.

NO is in a great position considering they just lost their franchise star. They could very likely be fielding a core of Eric Gordon, Anthony Davis, and Perry Jones 3/Jared Sullinger next year with a ton of cap space.

The Hornets came with some nice real estate. Plus, the USD purchasing power has weakened since that time. Both are contriubuting factors.

Can't help but think how much more attractive the team would've been with Rondo there, and signed for multiple years, instead of restricted FA to be Eric Gordon. At least David Stern saved Demps from himself because Benson could've been looking at a team centered around Odom, Scola, Martin, and Okafor.

Huge news. The future is much brighter than if the NBA kept control of the team. And recent scandal aside, the Saints have been a well run organization.
