  • Rondo doesn't believe in easy buckets...
I got a pretty good scare. I had just got home and turned on the TV to see the team standing around someone on a stretcher.  Then I hear Hubbie Brown say, "he missed a few games at the beginning of the year, but he's been playing well lately."  OH MAN!  I thought it was Pierce!  Anyway, I hope Pietrus gets better.

Why did he grab the back of his head after he fell?  He fell on his back, his head didn't hit the floor. Could it be a nerve in his spine caused pain in his head? Or did he catch an elbow?
Spine, probably. Something might've snapped, whiplash, something like that.

I'm no doctor, but that's what it seemed like to me.

.edit: also, he had some spasms afterwards when Eddie Lacerte was with him.

My wife said best case, whiplash. Something worse like a dislocated disc. She said it looked like he was going into shock the way he was breathing. The spitting up blood could be from biting his lip or tongue.

She said it was good he rolled over, but didn't like seeing him not move his feet afterwards. But we also didn't see everything.

Get well soon Pietrus....

Looked to me like he was moving his arms.  That wiki link is scary stuff, though.  Forget basketball, I just hope he's able to live his life again.

I agree I seriously hope that a closed head injury isn't what he's dealing with.

I'll be praying for Pietrus.

As I mentioned in the game thread, it is possible to get a concussion from a whiplash action without any blow to head if your brain is propelled so fast that it slams into you skull. This is something that has come up in recent research into athletes and concussions, with contact to the head not being necessary for causing brain trauma.

That he grabbed the back of his head rather than his neck seems rather telling from me.  I did talk to a relative with medical experience who said that the report of convulsions was consistent with some sort of cerebral event.

I'm looking all over for updates and there's nothing except for a tweet from Blakely:

A. Sherrod Blakely ‏ @SherrodbCSN

#CelticsTalk: #Celtics Doc Rivers said Pietrus will have additional tests, stay overnight.

Stay overnight? If its serious, wouldn't it be longer than overnight? Do we know what's wrong for sure? The lack of info is irritating.

Could just be a nasty concussion....but closed head injury seems worse than that

He has a head injury of some sort.  It is impossible to know how serious until tests are completed (unless something bad happens, like him slipping into a coma).   Those tests take time.  The brain is a delicate organ.  If he breaks a bone or tears a ligament, the damage is much more obvious.  If there's obvious damage to the brain, that's not a good sign.  The best-case scenario is a battery of tests that don't find any long-term damage, with everything filed under the general heading of "concussion".  That can take some time.

I just have the feeling that if they find something quickly, it means they found something serious, so it's better if we don't know for sure what's wrong before lunchtime tomorrow.

I feel somewhat better after reading this. It all makes sense. Thanks. TP.

I hope Mickael is alright.  I really don't care about how this will affect the wins and losses of the basketball team right now.

That team has gone through way too many scary injuries lately.

Get well, Mickael.  My thoughts will be with him.

Good news, indeed, though considering the type of injury, he will most likely not be playing in the next game or two, and will undergo further testing in Boston over the next couple of days. Great to see this.

Like everyone else, this sounds like really good news.  It is easy to forget that these guys are just people too, even though they seem larger than life.  I hope he takes his time coming back and make sure everything is ok.  Some things are more important than the Celtics...

I have really enjoyed watching MP this year for us.  Even though his shooting has been a bit up and down (we knew this coming in) I feel he has given the C's a great effort 110% every game I have seen him play.  I really admire his hustle and effort on d.  I think he is really fitting in and I hope that he is with us next year.  Get well soon Air France!

He will most likely miss the next 1-2 weeks if not more with concussion like symptoms. And you know how hard the league is on concussion these days which is fair enough.

Get well soon MP you have been a blast to watch!!

Is it safe to say ( aside from basketball but for his well well being) he didn't break any thing in his neck? What did they check for with the tests?

This was awful seeing happen to such good guy

The most obvious test is a CT scan to detect brain injury.  I'm sure he went through whatever the normally battery of tests is for detecting concussions and determining their severity, seeing how he responds to stimuli, testing if his memory is affected.
