Lin leaving the Knicks?

I am not a salary cap expert, however, I believe that Lin signed for $788k this year.  I also believe the Knicks are over the cap.  I also believe there are no Bird rights for Lin.  Assuming for a moment that Lin is in line for about $7 per year as his real value (especially considering his marketability), the Knicks cannot resign him for his true value, can they?  Who are the other players?  Dallas?  the Nets? Who else?

They claimed him off of waivers, that means they have his early bird rights based on the contract he signed with the Warriors.

So they can sign him up to the MLE (per Gilbert Arenas rule that is the most he can get) iirc.

The Gilbert Arenas rule means that Lin can't be offered a contract more than the full MLE.

He's not going anywhere.

Like Faf mentioned, the max he can get is the MLE.  He's staying in New York.

Lin is restricted, and because of the Arenas provision, no team can offer more than the MLE to him, so the Knicks would be able to match any offer.

However, this does bring up an interesting scenario, since everyone assumed Nash was destined for NY next year, and if Lin keeps this up, not only would they not need Nash, but they wouldn't be able to give Nash their MLE.

Ah, well that does put them in a pickle if they wanted to bring in Nash.

I bet they could work out a sign and trade with the Suns.

lin has proven to be a prime commodity in the circles of new york, i don't see him packing his bags anytime soon..he came at a time when the big apple is in dire need of a hero, his was a perfect storyline...

first, he has to maintain success the remainder of the season to prove this stretch isn't a fluke, especially once melo return and the dynamics of the team change.

Not quite true, but close enough.  Teams can actually structure deals for Lin where he earns the MLE in the first two years, and then gets a huge jump (up to a max salary) in the third and future years.  The important point, though, is that NY can match that offer with its MLE (which doesn't make a ton of sense, but those are the rules.)
