I think you're basing your opinion on past D'Antoni teams.

This current team is half court oriented. They're winning games on defensive end. Knicks defense ranks top6 defensive efficiency in the NBA under the guidance of assistant coach Mike Woodson.

Yes.  They are contenders.  Calling a team a contender doesn't mean you're guaranteeing they'll win the championship.  It means you can fathom them beating other contenders in a 7 game series.  I think they can take the Heat through depth, but it would be a 7 game series.  I also think Chicago and Philly series would also likely go 7 games....

IMO it all rides on Carmelo.  If he decides to put team first he could lead them to a championship.  If he goes for hero stuff they won't make it....
