awesome.  needs to be said again and again.  there needs to be some kind of accountability for being an NBA ref, and that accountability needs to be to something other than the league's bottom line.

I'm glad he explained it the way he did - refs get fatigued like everyone else, and the compressed schedule takes a toll on them too.  The NBA moves so fast and the rules are so subjective that calls will always be missed, but being tired and overworked is just going to increase that.

The league should have really worked on cutting down travel and/or games worked by its officials after the lockout schedule was released.

Some refs definitely allow their emotions to affect a game which should never happen.

NBA refs stink.  There is no doubt to this fact.

Still, here's the problem I have always had with players, coaches, GM's, owners, etc.. complaining to the media about it.  It generally just comes across as whining.  The complaining almost always is preceeded by a loss in a tough game.

Now, in specific relation to Mark Cuban, the problem I have with his public comments is this.  You are 1 of 30 NBA owners.  You are the one person in a position of power to actually do something about it if you don't like it.  If Cuban really feels this strongly about the state of officiating, he needs to pursuade his partners (the other 29 owners) to force Stern to do something.  They are ultimately Stern's boss, not the other way around.  By the owners not doing anything about it, they are essentially endorsing the staus quo as acceptable.

Cuban doesn't have much pull in how the NBA is run, especially on officiating. Its pretty clear Stern has carte blanch from at least 16 owners to run that how he sees fit.

Well, if this is ture, which I have no idea about, his problem would be with the other owners as much as it would be with Stern.  Sure, Cuban is only 1 of 30 "bosses'", but he is still a boss.  If Cuban feels as strongly as he does, which is evident by his public comments, he needs to adress the other owners.  If the owners, as a collective, want something, Stern's opinion is irrelevant.

I suppose it's possible the other owners don't see the officiating as the problem Cuban does, but why, if true?  It wouldn't make much sense, seeing as how it is widely viewed by the public as an issue that desperately needs to be resloved.

Given Cuban's record, Stern's ego, and the ref's collective egos, that's prob about a 300k fine right there...trying to be diplomatic is just not going to work for Cuban

Cuban should secretly pay someone to start a website which compiles detailed statistics on refs and has a blog which has a Deadspin-like, in-your-face confrontational attitude in highlighting bad referees.

Clearly, he should pay me $10 million/year to do that.
