It's definantly something to think about. As good as a shooter as Ray is, Johnson is much better at creating his own shot and a better defender. Johnson is in a lengthy contract with $100 mill left on it. He's only 30 years old which makes him a better option than Ray, who is 36, moving forwards.

Johnson has taken a step back from being a superstar after signing his big contract in the summer of 2010 but being in Boston could be the right situation to motivate Joe Johnson who hasnt played with a point guard of Rondo's caliber since 2005 when Nash was dishing him the rock. Obviously the Celtics would have to get a center to take over Jermaines spot (Maybe Pryzbilla?) and they would be back in the thick of things.

Rondo/ Dooling
Johnson/ Daniels/ Sasha
Pierce/ Pietrus
Garnett/ Bass
Pryzbilla/ Wilcox/ Steimsma

Joe Johnson is a good fit for Boston. But i don't know if Danny Ainge would be looking to pay Johnson 100 million over the next 5 years.

no.  wouldn't guarantee us anything and would saddle us with that awful contract for ages.

joe johnson isn't that good.

it would guatante that we don't contend for the next 5 years. The hawks were dumb enough to give him that contract, they should have to suffer for it.

I think everyone likes Johnson and his skill set, but not that contract.  I don't know enough to get into specifics, but I would imagine that our hopes of signing one or possibly even two max or near max free agents after this year would be shot with a contract like that on the books, and I don't know that it would make us that much better this year.  JJ has the edge in defense and being a more versatile scorer, but I don't think he'd bring that much more that this trade would be worth it.

I doubt ATL would even do this deal unless they want to dump JJ's salary.  Given they just signed him and could have used the amnesty on him I doubt that is the case.

I would make that trade as long as we had enough to sign another max deal next year. But I doubt that the Hawks would pull the trigger on that one.

I would, but don't know where is JJohnson head.  Sometimes I don't think he cares about winning a championship.  Bailed on PHX, can't seen to be a true captain for ATL.

...in short, we'll probably end up overpaying for a second/third tier all-star.

I don't even consider it.

Atlanta would be all over it if they knew what they were doing.

I assume this is a joke. Does anybody even like joe johnson?
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.

I actually think that Atlanta might do this given that both contracts is expiring.

I'd probably be willing to take on Johnson's contract, but I'd also want at a minimum Josh Smith (since I know Horford is out of the question).

I'd consider something like this

Boston - Josh Smith, Joe Johnson, Jeff Teague
Atlanta - Ray Allen, Kevin Garnett, Avery Bradley

The Celtics upgrade at every position in the trade, but take on a lot of long term salary.  Atlanta essentially becomes a player next summer with just Horford, Williams, Pachulia, and Bradley all they have on the books and still can remain competitive and interesting this season.
2025 Historical Draft - Cleveland Cavaliers - 1st pick

Starters - Luka, JB, Lebron, Wemby, Shaq
Rotation - D. Daniels, Mitchell, G. Wallace, Melo, Noah
Deep Bench - Korver, Turner

I'd want a(nother) 2012 1st rounder to even start talking.

We'd need players on rookie deals with JJ's $$ taking up so much of the cap.

But really the question seems to be whether this lineup seems viable:

Rondo
Joe Johnson
Jeff Green
Bass
Hustle Defender/Rebounder/Shot Blocker (aka The Shamrock Steamer?)
6th man:  Paul Pierce
Bench:  Mostly rookie deal players: J3, ETM, future picks

Looks potent offensively for sure, with decent size.  Could they learn team defense?

I think Johnson and Green could be decent foils for Wade and Lebron, expecially with our advantage at PG.

Add a couple of veterans to the bench, and this lineup might make a run (or 3).

Not sure I'd do it, but:

http://games.espn.go.com/nba/tradeMachine?tradeId=7hfwkxt

BOS trades:  Ray, JO, Bradley, Steimsma
ATL trades:  Johnson, Zaza

I read things in this thread like this type of trade "guarantees us nothing".  Well, the celtics aren't guaranteed anything otherwise - ESPECIALLY not a max free agent this summer.  I think it's looking bleaker and bleaker that Dwight comes to Boston next summer, so maybe it would be worth it to maximize our chances this year?  Zaza isn't perfect and doesn't get along with KG, but Zaza is a veteran very capable of playing playoff C minutes.  Steve Kerr mentioned that being traded to a team where you don't like players fades really fast and isn't an issue it's made out to be.

For Atlanta, it actually clears up enough cap space for them to be in the running for Dwight and offer him a situation that could be appealing with Horford and Josh Smith (a friend of his?) in place.  At worst, they shed themselves of the NBA's worst contract.
2020 CelticsStrong All-2000s Draft -- Utah Jazz

Agree that you need a big in return; but you basically made that argument yourself. Why take a bad contract for a horizontal move. JO is useful (although not for huge minutes). Ray is one of our best players and he is getting double teamed because Paul is out.
