did you see how quick wade (tho he's a clutch shooter) & lebron turned in to female dogs when boston brought that out in the 4th? the man to man would not work against Miami because that speed and athleticism could embarrass a player but when you slow them down with the zone they lose all ability to drive to the basket

it worked against the heat but they were grabing alot of offensive rebounds on us. other teams would kill us from the perimeter

as long as they are starting a slab of quasi-mobile beef jerky at center, yes, the Celtics should look into employing a zone defense for long stretches.

no way to defend inside otherwise, not with KG looking like he just emerged from a globule of amber from the Cretaceous period.

I think it is going to work better against certain teams (like the Heat), and not against others (like the Knicks), but I love the fact that they have added it to their repertoire.

Last year Dallas used to zone a lot, and it allowed them to succeed with really just 1 inside defender, and with a lot of weird lineup combinations, often with undersized players.  It also allowed them to save the legs of their aging players a bit.

I think this is exactly what the C's need.  They shouldn't run it all the time, but by mixing it in, it will allow guys like KG to rest a bit from chasing guys all over the court, and allow Doc to be a little more creative in getting offensive oriented players on the court, and doing things like the 3 guard offense, etc.

The defense the C's played a couple years ago just won't work anymore.  That really relied on having multiple big men who can really defend the pick and roll on the perimeter, and requires everyone to be working really hard on the switches.  With no more Perk, Davis, and Sheed, older legs, and a compressed schedule, it just won't work.  They can pull it off for stretches, which will be important late in big games, but it can't be the default like it used to be.

The zone is just a great weapon to have in your repertoire, and should fit this team as well as it fit the Mavs last year.

Zone won't work vs shooters. I think Spo should've countered last night by going small (replacing Haslem with Jones) to attack the zone.

all the C's have to do is be more aggressive on defense i think it could stop Miami and Chicago ...the plan for new york should be to just deny melo the ball

The reason the zone works so well against Miami is because neither Wade, nor LeBron are great shooters.  That's not to say that both can't get hot (we've seen that first hand), but neither is on the level of Pierce or Allen.  Thus, the zone forces them to be shooters, which is not something that plays to their advantage.

The problem against a team like NY is that Carmelo and Amare are strong shooters, so it doesn't work as well against them.

So yes, I'd use it, especially against Miami, but I don't think it automatically works on everyone.
