Ray Allen was a guest on local Boston radio station WEEI today. The following exchange occured at 7:50 in the audio link. Allen discusses his thoughts on possible retirement and a contract extension with the Celtics.
According to WEEI.com:

Question:  How much longer are you going to do this?

Ray Allen:  That's one thought that I haven't really put out there. .... When I decide to stop playing, it won't be because of me.  I think it will be more because of my circumstances.... Obviously, for one if I'm not here anymore.  That's a huge deterrent.  You end up having to player somewhere that is not to the standards where I've been in the last 3 or 4 years.  Physically, I'm in a a great place. So I don't worry about that all.  Again, there are so many unforeseen circumstances that can take place that can cause me to hang it up.

Question:  This is your last year.  Are you thinking now about staying, playing here longer?  Extending? New deal?

Ray Allen:  Yeah, of-course I'm thinking about it.  I don't need or want to go anywhere.  We got to get the rally hats going, so we can sign that new deal.  That's a Danny Ainge question.   Of-course I'd love to continue to be here.

So does this hurt Ray's trade value? If teams know it will only be a few month rental they would be hesitant to give up anything besides maybe a pick.

I want KG and Ray to stay here so they can win another title. I think their numbers should be retired due to how they have helped resurrect this franchise.
Signed to a 6 year $0 contract with the Celtics Blog forum!

Don't you just hate it when players try to influence where they end up while they are under contract?  :)

  • It's all about the TEAM!
I think Ray would be willing to come off the bench for us in the coming years rather than starting at someplace he doesn't want to play. It doesn't sound like he would ask for much out of the Celtics. I think he'll stay with us as long as he's able. I don't like the idea of Ray as trade bait. I'd let him retire here if he accepts his dwindling role (when it's time for that).

He's a Celtic

With Ray's style of game, plus the fact that he keeps himself in great shape, he's got 3 more seasons as an effective player - think Reggie Miller.  I'd give him one more contract.

All this media crap that he's too old is just that - crap.

This is great.
It means the Cs can renouce rights to him next season (along with KGs), then sign a couple max money FAs, then sign Ray to the vet min.
I don't believe it will happen, but, a man can hope...

As long as Ray wants to keep playing, I'd keep offering him contracts.

Ray at age 45 will be a more useful player than at least 15% of the players in the league.

Ray has skill (shooting) that will never leave him.   He is in excellent shape too.  So far getting his shot off and separation from his defender hasn't been an issue for him.  I too would resign him.
