Jermaine O'Neal is only 33 years old and even though he has a lot of miles on his legs and body, it is still possible that he could emerge, with a healthy comeback year. Let's face it, its a contract year, he barely played last year, and he had one of the longest off seasons ever to recuperate, train and rejuvenate himself. He also has almost no competition for the starting center position.

All this could very well mean something that I think almost no Celtics fans will be expecting this year, a huge comeback year for Jermaine O'Neal. No, I'm not talking about a return to 20 PPG, 10 RPG and 2.5 blocks per game. But if O'Neal could return to being a 14 PPG, 7 RPG, 1.8 BPG center in about 30 MPG, like he was over the three seasons before coming to the Celtics last year, that would IMHO, be huge.

It would be huge for him in re-establishing his market value and earning one last contract before retiring. It would be huge for the Celtics as a team as they desperately need an under the basket presence on both ends of the court at the center position. It would be huge for the Big Three as they strive one last time for a championship before their window is closed by their age and by Danny Ainge's need to begin the rebuilding process next year.

I don't think asking O'Neal for 30 MPG, a season of health, and similar production on a per game and per minute basis as he had in the three years prior to becoming a Celtic is out of the question. Yeah, people like to bag on O'Neal because of his injuries and the amount of time he takes off while having collected over $150 million in his career. But I think he could be primed for one of those Comeback Player of the Year type years and it could come at a better time.

I hope you're right Nick. I believe if healthy your numbers are reachable for JO. I also believe that is a big if. There were many comments last year about career ending injury and I only hope he has had enough time to start with a clean slate and avoid the injury bug this year.

If he can have the impact he did in the Knicks series that would be exactly what this team needs.
DKC:  Rockets
CB Draft: Memphis Grizz
Players: Klay Thompson, Jabari Parker, Aaron Gordon
Next 3 picks: 4.14, 4.15, 4.19

In Miami, O'Neal averaged 14/7 with a TS% 56.3% (the highest of his career) and fairly good defense (including excellent post defense) in 28 mpg.

It was actually better than what he did in Toronto or his last year in Indiana.

If O'Neal manages to stay healthy and doesn't shoot too many bad shots, he can be a very effective player in those 30 minutes or so.

I will take 8 and 8 with more then a block a game and strong team defense for the whole season and playoffs right now.

My hopes for JO are similar, and as he showed at the end of last season, he's still capable of being that player.

For what it's worth he actually appears to be in great shape this year. He really has slimmed down big time - can only help his knees.

What weight did he report to camp at?  That is the key to staying healthy.  That is why Shaq retired. Weight = injuries.

If he was healthy last year he would have been our best all around center, better than shaq or perk.  I can see him returning to those numbers but would like his time at 25 mpg or under.  I'd like to see he & kg have minutes watched closely.  Put JJ out there with 4 future hall of famers and he'll look fine.  Same with brandon bass.  I'm hoping we have a fair amount of big man rotation and when we can go with green at sf and run the  :-X  out of the other teams.  If we run more watch how much easier it is for everyone to score, rondo's vision is that good

Totally agree...JO was very skinny when he was younger...he bulked up/gained weight and his knees couldnt take the abuse.

Shaq's resurgent year in Phoenix, he was in great shape...

  • Sometimes there's no sane reason for optimism
There's no reason, if healthy, we can't expect him to be as effective as Perk ever was. Maybe his defense isn't quite there (but it is pretty darn close), but his offensive prowess more than makes up for it.

If everyone stays healthy this year, or is at least healthy for the playoffs (which obviously is a big 'if'), then the Celtics have the ability to take on anyone...

When I read the C's signed David West, I was excited. When I learned it was for JO, I was kinda disappointed. I really feel like he can do a lot for this team.

If he can stay healthy (and that doesn't mean playing with nagging injuries), I think our defense will distinguish itself once again as clearly the best. He can knock down open jumpers that he should see several of per game from the starters. I don't think his rebounding is elite anymore, but I could see him in double digits for scoring with like 6 boards and two blocks.

He also brings a great deal of quiet leadership and has matured over the years (especially since the "malice at the palace").

We got a small glimpse of what he is capable of in the playoffs last season, even when he was rusty AND injured. I know it's a big if, but if he can stay healthy, this starting 5 can beat any team's starters.

I'm on board IF he actually is in the shape he says he is. He clearly would have been better off last year if he was in better shape. (same goes for fat Shaquille as well, darnit)

A somewhat ripped, lean and healthy JO will be a great piece. I think he finally took it seriously and is determined to prove he's still got it at least for one last year!!! Go baby go.

Some people seem to think he is the sort of player who does better in the last year of a contract.  I'm not really interested in goals for points or rebounds.  My hope is that he plays 75% of regular season games and 100% of playoff games with at least 25 minutes per game.  As long as he is healthy enough to do that, he should be contributing.

Anybody correct me if I am wrong.

Everyone complained we wasted the MLE on JO last year, which has some truth to it. But looking at contracts and FA signings/ S+T etc. who else could we have picked up?

I look at the names thrown out on here now and none can really be put on JO's level. I mean Kwame Brown just signed a (7 or 9 mil contract, can't remember for GSW) bigger contract than JO and his only advantage to JO is health I think. Well if we wanted that we could just sign a below average big with no major health issues. I understand the health question, but really what other knocks can you really put on JO at this point?

We didn't (and don't) have the cash to throw $12-$16 million at a center, which btw is RIDICULOUS money. A whole different argument. So who else would have been better?? and even if we saved some $ on them by not using the MLE, would that $ even be used effectively if at all? I personally don't think so.

While PG's dominate this league, C's are the top priority in today's game and we did fairly well grabbing JO. I'm a realist but I'll jump on OP's wagon and say he'll contribute this year. Haha are you really rooting against him?
The Nets will finish with the worst record and the Celtics will end up with the 4th pick.
