Can someone explain to me when you get a trade exception? My understanding is if we trade someone and the salaries do not match up you get the difference in salaries? Or is it only if you trade a player for a pick or cash (aka no salary coming back). If we traded Wafer for a salary exception do we get one in return? Wouldn't that be enough for Fernandez?
If you make a trade to a team and don't take back salary you get a trade exception equal to the salary you sent out.
So when Cleveland traded Lebron James to Miami they took back only picks and a 16 million dollar trade exception (which was equal to LBJ's salary)
Typically if a team is under the cap you get a trade exception, or when a team is using a trade exception to get a player the other team will get one in turn.
So we should get a TPE for Wafer then correct since they used theirs to trade him to us?
Yes, we'll get a trade exception equal to Wafer's salary + $100k.
Cool, now that I know we have the ability to trade for him I will brace myself to be let down when he goes to another team.
