NBA says Hornets want younger players in return.
We can make the Indiana trade happen still, we have Rondo, and some picks.
I say go for it.
I hope Danny is on the phones right now.
"We are lucky we have a very patient GM that isn't willing to settle for being good and coming close. He wants to win a championship and we have the potential to get there still with our roster and assets."

quoting 'Greg B' on RealGM after 2017 trade deadline.
Read that last line again. One more time.

Explain to me how the league kills this Pau Gasol deal, but allows Kwame Brown for Pau Gasol?
When the "anonymous source" says that they already lose my respect.  The league didn't own the Grizzlies.  The league DOES OWN the Hornets.  That's your explanation

Sounds like Demps didn't get pre-approval on the trade and didn't pay attention to what the league wants from a Chris Paul trade... they want to minimize salary... not take on 73+ million

there really does seem to have been a colossal amount of miscommunication here.  based on the deal, you'd think the hornets were trying to make the trade that would make them as competitive as possible right now.  it made sense, more or less, from that standpoint.  it made hardly any sense as a move to rebuild or make the team financially appealing to potential buyers.

it seems like demps was not aware what his priorities in making a deal should have been.
Or more likely he made his own priorities paramount. A new owner is going to likely want his own GM, keeping them competitive this year burnishes his credentials.

Not sure how trading a star for a bunch of overpaid role players burnishes his credentials. Makes him look like a Laker stooge, IMHO - Chris Wallace redux.

They'd still be competitive for a playoff spot.

A rebuilding trade would lead to a lottery spot for sure.

The NBA doesn't care about any of that. They're trying to sell the club with some degree of promise - hence the request for younger players and picks, not pawn off a team over the cap and loaded with overpaid players on the downside of their careers.

It was a horrific trade, and the league - which owns the club - has every right in the world to veto it. The litigation threat is laughable.
