Someone may have said something about this, but do these guys come off the cap? What's up with them? Do teams have to save a spot or something? Do they have to take them back this year if they come back?

Teams have to hold cap space for them or they lose their rights. (make a qualifying offer)

Then the team controls their rights whenever they get back from China (whose season ends around March)

So by going over seas they sorta became restricted free agents?

Yeah, but those who aren't RFA wouldnt' become RFA because of it. But to hold any bird rights or RFA rights they'll have to keep a cap hold for the player. (Kenyon Martin/Wlison Chandler)

As I understand it....

If the player is a restricted free agent, the team retains the ability to match an offer from another (NBA) team.

If the player is unrestricted, the team maintains any Bird (or early Bird) rights so long as they don't renounce the free agent.  Teams don't renounce free agents until they need the space under the cap.  The different MLE for luxury taxed teams may change that.

So if they don't hold a spot for them they just lose them and they become UFAs. Kinda a weird amnestyish scenario. Interesting

The guys in China were all without long term deals I believe.

So an interesting sub plot this year could be around March JR Smith, Kenyon Martin, and Wilson Chandler or whoever it was becoming FAs and being added to teams.

I can so see the Heat or someone signing them to min deals

Some of them are probably making more money than they are were going to make here.
