but teams don't make collective decisions to make up trade rumors about teams. That's a huge no-no.

They do it all the time, they do it to put pressure on their desired trade partners. GMs often work together to cook up the fake trades to drive up the price, but that doesn't always happen sometimes its just one side doing it.

Teams absolutely work together to fake trades to drive up offers. Happens hundreds of times a year.

To get to the OPs idea, rather than whether or not GMs lie to make up trade offers, I don't think there is a whole lot of point to leaking such a rumor.

All reports are that Otis Smith hasn't even started the process of telling teams what he wants for Howard, such a rumor thus won't be believable.

get howard now if we can and sign cp3 in the off season.  NY will not have the room to sign him and we will have howard to rebuild around plus pp, kg and ra - add cp3

Nope. Again most teams don't have three All Stars to pair him with and I am sure more ppl out there then not feel that is why he is as good as he is.
