I spend very little money on the NBA so I don't see how I could really boycott it effectively.  I guess I could stop watching it on TV, but I don't really see that as a possibility for me.

Depending on how much of the season is lost, I'd consider not attending games this year.  If the whole season is lost, I might lose enough interest to not bother going to any games the following year.

I've boycotted baseball since the cancellation of the World Series in '94 by not attending games or any merchandise.  I've seen very few televised games since my interest just isn't what it used to be.  (As a Brewer fan in New England, I've only paid mild attention to any postseason trips by the Red Sox -- inescapable in NE -- and the recent postseason trips by the Brewers.)
For me, baseball has far more tradition than basketball and the sport is far greater than the owners or players so cancelling the World Series over $ was inexcusable.  The NBA, not so much.  I'd miss basketball this season but would most likely watch televised games when they finally resume playing.

Well you can add an easy one for me to boycott:

Quote
The owners' faction includes between 10 and 14 owners and is being led by Charlotte's Michael Jordan, according to a person who has spoken with the owners. That group wanted the players' share set no higher than 47 percent, and it was upset when league negotiators proposed a 50-50 split last month.

I've been a little worried that the owners would cave so it's good to see that this many owners are holding the line. Good for them.

I can't think of anything feasible that would hurt the players or owners financially. Anything I've thought of would seem to hurt merchants, venders, parking lot attendants, etc. more than it would hurt the owners or players.

So... I have a simple idea.  Something that wouldn't really impact the pocketbooks of any of the players or owners, but would at least allow for the collective voice of fans to be heard:

When the NBA resumes, select a prime-time moment at which fans at all stadiums can be alerted via whatever web-messaging is available (I don't really know how these twitter or whatever things work) -- and fans across the country could simultaneously do something:  Stand and boo;  Create a chant of some sort; Be silent and hold up 'protest posters' --- whatever, and have it last 5 minutes or so to get the attention of the players/ owners, etc.  It may seem a hollow gesture in the midst of fans returning to the games, but it at least allows some measure of voice/message from fans regarding a situation in which we have had no contol and have been ignored.

Thoughts?

I love the idea, but these types of things never seem to work or gain enough steam to make an impact.

We've never been in the era of immediate communication to so many people at once.  The recent rebellions in the Arab world would never have been possible without the social media available today.  Not trying to place the importance of this anywhere near that, but just saying that today's communcations make different types of things possible.

Still, we've had plenty of recent attempts for similar thing. I remember for the longest time Kansas City tried to rally protests to show their anger with Royal management. The Cleveland Browns had their dispute with their team's performance.  I'm sure I'm blanking on plenty of others.

The only successful one I can think of was Cleveland with Lebron, but the anger was much greater and universal there than it will be when the NBA season returns.

Boycott = lost revenue = more teams losing money = even worse negotiations next time.

Seriously though, both sides thing they are justified. They know how we feel, but they feel the side they are negotiating is the problem. They will feel the same way next time.

The NBA game has so many problems right now and this lockout business is only hurting it. My feelings won't get hurt until the Patriots season ends and I have no Celtics games to look forward to. That is going to suck for me big time. That and the uncertainty of what course of action Danny Ainge will take going forth..... Trade everyone for draft picks, lower tier players that won't make the playoffs but are coachable by Doc Rivers. This is not what most fans here would sign up for.

With the way things are turning out at these negotiations, I have flopped over to pessimism and anger at the NBA for fudging themselves but good this time. This is completely rediculous that they cannot come up with a solution and I will cancel my LP and avoid watching the games for a while.
The beatings will continue until morale improves

  • And the Truth shall set you free
Really the way I'm looking at this is that the NBA is making a product that I enjoy, of which they are under no obligation to provide.  If they play, they make money, if not they don't.  Best of all, I get it for free most of the time via TV.  What other product offers you that?

Sure I attend games and and at times buy merchandise but that's for my entertainment.  It's a fair exchange.  If say, Gillette, stopped producing my favorite razor, I may switch to another while its out of production but I'll buy it up as soon as it's back on the market because it's the best.

I see this as the same situation.  Hell, this lockout is actually making me want basketball more than usual and as soon as a deal is announced I'm going to be ready to watch every minute of every game.  The lessened supply has only increase my demand... I'm just a basketball junkie and I'm sure most people won't feel the same.  Just my perspective.
