The tomato slice - a useful component of any great sandwich, or a waste of space (and often to your sandwich handling detriment) which could be better allocated to more deli meat?

Me, I'm a no-tomato guy.  Leaves more room for bacon.  Also, no pickles on hamburgers please.

I disagree strongly regarding pickles...  I'm a big proponent.

As for tomatoes, I take them or leave them most of the time.  I generally tend to prefer roasted red peppers over them, although tomatoes have their place on BLTs, club sandwiches, etc.

Oh Roy, you always say the right things! <3

...

So anyway, no tomato's, preferably. I'm allergic, but it's not like an instant-choke-and-die type of allergic, so if there's a tomato on my hamburger, I'll probably eat it because I'm lazy, then regret it afterwards.

I was willing to listen to the tomato argument (I think its a texture thing)...but no pickles?  Now that's just something I can't go along with.

If the sandwich is fresh, a tomato slice tastes great, given the tomato is crisp.
But, you wouldn't make sandwiches with tomato's in the morning and take in to work to eat for lunch as it will make the bread way too soggy...
Pickles are awesome on burgers, and, depending on what type of sandwich we're talking, are great too! :)

Odd thread combination, but I was big on peanut butter and pickle sandwiches when I was a kid...

Tomatoes are great, if you're worried about not having room for more meat on your sandwich, use a bigger bun/piece of bread.

One of my favorite sandwiches lately is the Cubano. I think it might be the combo of the red onions, pickles, and garlic mayo. Without any of them it isn't the same. I gotta have the main components (roast pork, roast beef, cheddar & baguette) but the flavor is from the sweet and bite from the mayo & onions and the sour and tang of the pickles. Definitely a no tomato needed sandwich! I can't think of a sandwich where bacon or pickles wouldn't make it better.

Pickles, gross.

Tomatoes, gross.

99% of the time I pass on everything but Mayo.  I'm with SO, I like to taste as much meat, bread, and cheese as possible.

But if we're talking about a regular cold cut sandwich, I'll throw on some potato chips.

Tomatoes are a mood and combination thing for me ... depends on what they're going with and what I feel like having. I've never liked pickles on anything, though I like them beside certain sandwiches or alone, and Claussen are king ... cooking a pickle ruins it, IMO.
