The 5 mil a year idea for 2 of our Big 3 wouldn't work. Bird Rights Signings would effect our cap space before we could try and offer Howard a contract.
Plus we'd lose Jeff Green too if we let him walk to get Howard. Not saying I'd rather have Green than Howard but salary wise, only way it would work is if half our players sign for veteran minimums and the Mid Lvl Exp if it still exists then

Rondo - 11m            Delonte - vet min     Bradley - 1.5m
Ray - vet min          EMoore - .78m
Pierce - 16.7m         JGreen - 6.0MLE
KG - vet min           JuJuanJ - 1.5m        BBD - bi-an exp
Dwight - 18m           JOneal - vet min

Maybe I'm missing something here but that's the only way I can see it working financially. And that team would only be a threat for a year, MAYBE 2 giving the health of the aged Big 3. And does that appeal to DHoward to come to a team to possibly win a ring, maybe 2? Only if he's coming b/c he wants to be part of the Celtics history and make something of himself. Imagine him playing up to the shoes of Russell...
Can't stop, Rondo!

Yep, we'd have to renounce Ray and KG, and most likely could only sign them to minimum contracts.  (Insert obligatory rant about how the local media has no idea about salary cap rules here.)

If there's no season though, it most likely means the owners won. So not even a max contract would start at 18mil. More likely 14 mil.
