  • I left Indiana. Because it was horrible.
Pub draft:

3 beers, 1 liquor, 5 musical acts

Oh no, I've already got the format figured out. From July 9th's CB Draft Interest thread:

I'm bored and waiting for events to unfold tonight. Here's my ultimate fantasy bar draft lineup:

Beer (mainstream - defined as any beer that is likely to be carried by distributors across America): Moosehead
Beer (mainstream): Honey Brown
Beer (mainstream): Leinenkugel's Summer Wheat Magic Hat #9
Beer (local): Pete's Wicked Ale - Rally Cap Ale
Beer (local): Milwaukee Brewing Company - Flying Damsel
Beer (local): Yeungling

Whiskey: Blanton's (Pricey...effective - second place, Bulleit)
Vodka: Luksusowa (Cheap, sweet, efficient)
Rum: Banker's Club (Because my liver can go )
Gin: Plymouth (a solid option for martinis, tonic, or ginger ale)
Tequila: Pass.

Wild Card Liquor: Southern Comfort (mixes with everything, relatively cheap)
Wild Card Beer: Three Floyd's Gumballhead (Best beer available to complement a cigar - the brew that made me like hoppy beers)

What's yours?

6 beers - 3 local, 3 mainstream, then a whiskey, vodka, rum, gin, and tequila, and two wild cards; one beer, one liquor.

I think that's the good basis for a solid fantasy bar draft.

EDIT: Upon reflection, the ultimate bar draft was GC's idea that I just ran with, so credit him with the brilliance behind this one.

DKC Bucks. Also terrible.

So what am I supposed to do with my work day now that this is over?

Seconded. 2K11 roster league?

Is there really any reason we can't do another CBD in 6-8 weeks?

We'd prob be able to draw in a few GMs who were busy.

If we expanded to 26 or 28 teams + a new draft order + how people value players differently, it'd be a totally diff draft.

Would folks be more or less scared of drafting Lebron? Do guys who were value picks become overvalued?

I'd do whatever I can as a non-Mod to make it happen

If there's a lockout, I'm sure people will have a newfound lot of extra time on their hands, so it could happen.

I don't see why people are going to value players any differently though.  What has made people change their minds?  Not basketball, that's for sure.

I also think 24 teams turned out pretty good.  I guess 26 to 28 wouldn't be bad, but quality of activity is more important than quantity in this game.

I'll trade down as long as you promise not to draft Beer in mason jars.

The biggest reason is burnout.  By keeping the CB Draft to a once a year thing, it builds anticipation, interest, etc.  Do it to often, and you risk the novelty of it wearing off.

We have four annual drafts:  the CB Draft, the Pick 2 Draft, the Ultimate Draft, and the Historic Draft.  Are there any additional ideas that people would like to explore?

The staff has in the past at least toyed around with the idea of an auction style draft, or a draft involving a salary cap.  Those become a lot more complicated, but it's something to talk about.

The only thing I'd really like to see improve is the team rosters thread, which was pretty slow at getting updated last year too.  I noticed after I sent my vote that the guy who was doing it didn't even have his roster right and that made me worry my entire rankings were wrong.

I know it's hard to keep up, but I'd love to at least see it up to date by the time the regular season voting begins.

The guy who was doing it underestimated the amount of work involved. Keeping pace with the draft board was easy, but parsing trades - particularly later blockbusters - proved to be difficult. Also GMs like yourself who posted their rosters to the thread just once or just never didn't make the guy's life any easier. Anyone who updated their roster daily in thread had a daily updated roster.

But, okay, yes, the guy, did forget to swap Garnett for Gasol on his own team. The Jazz's roster was correct though. Maybe subconsciously he wished he'd never made the trade.

We could start a new tradition where the previous year's winner takes on the job in the following draft?

Obviously.

With 6 per squad we could have up to 25 trainers.  Weaknesses/strengths would make for interesting matchups.

Yeah, the steady level of activity throughout - or until the last two rounds? - was great, as was GM retention. But is there an advantage to setting a number beforehand? I was a little disappointed to see stalwart former GM PosImpos turned away.

Maybe interest level should drive the size of the league? If we have twenty-two reliable, interested GMs than we have a twenty-two team league, if we have twenty-seven GMs sign up then we have twenty-seven teams.

Also, has anyone given IndeedProceed credit for the prompt BPA picks? We've handled missed picks in the early rounds differently in different years, and in hindsight IP's method seems to be best for the league. Although my competitive side understands the argument of letting anyone who misses their first round top 10 pick draft Tony Parker at 9:30.

In general I agree -- and think that there would be MUCH less interest if/when there were real Basketball to discuss.

That said this year seems to present a hopefully-once-in-10-year-opportunity.

if October/November comes and the players are still locked out --- don't ever forget it's the owners who've locked the players out --- and fantasy baseball season is over I, for one, will have a bit of time on my hands.

So what am I supposed to do with my work day now that this is over?

Sorry, my point wasn't that individual GMs would rank players differently but rather the fact that we all differ on who we value PLUS having a different draft order will mean the draft will be very different even though no more games have been played.

A simple example. Let's say that the lottery gods stop handing me picks in the 20s and I got Pick #10 -- where IP took Amare Stoudemire. I personally had 4 guys ranked ahead of him that were available at that pick, so Amare would go lower (or maybe someone with a higer pick already nabbed him) after that first pick, a lot more happens b/c of fit/roles/who's available, etc.

there *could* be some backing off of certain players b/c of perceived "value" --- would players like Nick Young slide even further b/c a GM thinks they'll have an uphill battle "defending" the pick? (Personally I wouldn't, but that throws yet another variable into the mix). On the flipside does someone go out and grab a guy earlier than they were drafted just now, because eveyrone said "love the pick"...

Gin: Plymouth (a solid option for martinis, tonic, or ginger ale)
